FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Elden Ring is one of the most popular titles and still records a large number of players despite being released two years ago. The game’s highly anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is finally set to release on June 21, 2024, and players are excited to delve into the Land of Shadow.
Elden Ring has been praised for its gameplay, settings, various playstyles, and high levels of freedom. Most importantly, the vast open-world structure has largely contributed to the game’s appeal, and creative director Miyazaki has no plans to compromise with it.
The Elden Ring DLC Will Hopefully Be Able to Replicate the Perfection of the Base Game
Following the launch of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC release date trailer last month, Hidetaka Miyazaki sat for an interview with Eurogamer, where he talked about the game and the upcoming expansion. He also discussed how the open world contributed to the game’s success and how it provides approachability to players, regardless of whether they are newcomers or veterans.
Elden Ring‘s difficulty is also an important point of its appeal to players, but it hasn’t been accessible to many due to that reason as well, and the DLC will not change in regards to that. Miyazaki said that if players are unable to accomplish something in the game due to difficulty, then “there’s no point” because they can’t reach a sense of accomplishment.
He added that it’s important to know that the difficulties can be overcome, and FromSoft’s several games have this theme. Miyazaki also added that they’re always working on the difficulty and want to improve it. He said, “This is a difficult subject, and it’s something we’re always looking at, always striving to improve.” He said that the DLC will not have any new features to help with the difficulty.
Elden Ring’s Difficulty Is Excruciating but Gives Players Joy
Despite its difficulty, Elden Ring has been played by hordes of new players in the genre, but many have also felt that it is too much for them and have left it midway. Miyazaki has previously said that he feels apologetic towards players who are not able to delve into the game and overcome the challenges, but added that overcoming hardship is his and FromSoftware’s game’s “identity.”
Miyazaki said that he likes to make difficult games because he wants players to experience joy when they overcome a challenge. He added that FromSoftware is always looking to improve in that area, but overcoming difficulty gives meaning to the player’s experience in these games.
Miyazaki’s right, as players die plenty of times trying to fight a boss or get frustrated trying to figure something out, but it is extremely joyful when the deed gets done. Accessibility also has been a major point of criticism and discussion in Miyazaki’s games, as there aren’t enough accessibility options when some games have over 60, but that’s what makes FromSoft games unique.
