GTA 5 is still one of the most successful and well-made open-world sandbox games of all time. Even before its launch, there was no doubt about it: this game was destined to be such a phenomenal success. Then came GTA Online, an MMO like no other; it was just what fans wanted—a GTA game, but online, that they could play with their friends.

As online mode became a success, Rockstar Games started putting more and more resources into making add-on missions for it. As these expansions started piling up, rumors started coming in of canceled single-player DLCs. Over the years, there has been no official statement regarding those DLCs, but recently, a very reliable source came out with his side of the story.

GTA Online became the reason for the cancelation of GTA 5’s story DLC

The original GTA 5 featured three distinctive protagonists. One of them was a melodramatic ex-master thief, Michael. The second was a street-smart African-American youngster eager to escape the gangster lifestyle everyone thought he was destined for. And the final one was a m*th-addict ex-pilot who was just bonkers in the head.

These three characters drove the game’s story, and they did it exceptionally well. Hence, when rumors started coming in for three planned DLCs for this game, fans were pretty excited. They instantly guessed that three DLCs meant they would focus on each of these characters.

No one knew what these DLCs were about; before they could, they were canceled. Rockstar Games never talked about them; they never even confirmed these DLCs existed. But recently, some kind of legitimate confirmation surfaced regarding these expansions.

The recent GTA 5 leak revealed the source code of the game and other confidential information.

Steven Ogg, the actor who played Trevor in the game, revealed that production on one of these DLCs had actually begun. It focused on Trevor, of course; it is being called a James Bond-like DLC where Trevor went undercover for an intelligence agency.

“Trevor was gonna be undercover – he works for the feds. And we did shoot some of that stuff with ‘James Bond Trevor’ – he’s still kind of a fuck up, but he’s doing his best to pretend to be like [a secret agent]. We shot some stuff and then it just disappeared and [Rockstar] never did it, they never followed up on it.”

He regrets not being able to complete this project, of course. But it was not his decision after all; it was all about Rockstar Games shifting their focus to GTA Online. They seemingly made the right choice too, as GTA Online is going strong more than 10 years after GTA 5’s launch. It has a community of a very dedicated bunch of gamers who play it for hours.

Fans would know that this is not the first project from Rockstar Games that just disappeared in thin air. Previously, their spy game called Agent was also removed from their upcoming projects list for no clear reason.

Fans are understandably hating Rockstar Games’ decision

While the DLC starring Steven Ogg sounded promising enough, its cancelation was a sucker punch that shook gamers everywhere. Anyone who hears about it cannot help but suggest how Rockstar Games made the wrong choice.

One cannot help but wonder if they would do something similar for GTA 6 or not. Maybe they would simply do away with a DLC by default and push GTA Online towards its next-gen and focus on that.
