Martin was in talks with HBO for a possible adaptation of his Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas as far back as 2013. He pitched the idea to the studio in 2016 only to be rejected. Fans came to know about the project when rumors of the pitch were reported in early 2021.

Fans got a glimpse of the upcoming spin-off from the Game of Thrones franchise, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, on Sunday. The new series will feature Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Aegon V Targaryen. The duo are known as Dunk and Egg in George R.R. Martin‘s lore.

In the newly released teaser, fans get to see shots of Claffey’s Dunk in his armor and a look at the young Egg sitting by a fire. The tweet reported that the series will arrive on Max in 2025. The first season of the series will reportedly adapt Martin’s The Hedge Knight, the first among the three-part novellas. It is assumed that seasons 2 and 3 will adapt the subsequent novellas, The Sworn Sword and Mystery Knight.

Fans are not exactly thrilled about the series, especially since it covers a side quest from the Game of Thrones universe rather than a full-fledged storyline. Fans shared on X that they would rather prefer a spin-off series that explores Aegon’s Conquest from the books. Fans shared that they were not invested in the new series. Some of the fan reactions read:

Martin and Ira Parker will serve as the executive producers on the series alongside Ryan Condal, the showrunner of House of the Dragon. Martin has been rooting for the original series for a long time, which should be a sign for fans to consider watching this quest of Dunk and Egg.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set 89 years before the events of the original series and almost 77 years after the events of season one of House of the Dragon. The logline of the series mentions that the series is about the coming together of two unlikely heroes who wandered in Westeros when the Targaryens still ruled the Iron Throne. The official logline read (via Variety):

A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

According to TVLine, WBD boss David Zaslav announced the Game of Thrones prequel show will premiere in late 2025. He shared the details during the company’s Q4 earnings call on Friday. In November 2021, Deadline reported that the series was in development, with Martin confirming the news in 2022 via his blog.

Fans should trust Martin on this one and give the series a chance. Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are now available for streaming on Max.
