Thanks to the blockbuster adaptation of Game of Thrones followed by the prequel House of the Dragon, prolific author George R.R. Martin attained cult status in Hollywood. The writer who was also involved in the production of the show, transported global audiences to his fascinating fantasy world of medieval feuds and politics that was aptly brought to life by showrunners David Benioff and D.B Weiss.
Now, fans of the series have a treat in store as Martin’s The Hedge Knight will be made into a series. The Game Of Thrones spin-off has cast former rugby player Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall. While the athlete’s towering personality is still not a match for the extreme height the character requires, Martin assured fans that he will be made to look exactly like how he was envisioned.
George R.R. Martin Promises To Give Fans A Treat With The Hedge Knight
George R.R. Martin’s brilliance as a writer saw him create many epic works that have become massive series on television. Now, after the iconic Game Of Thrones and House of the Dragon, fans will get to witness Martin’s novellas come to life.
The first part of the Tales of Dunk and Egg trilogy is The Hedge Knight which is set between the events in House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, and has been given the green flag by HBO (via Variety) to be developed into a series.
The story follows the adventures of two unlikely heroes, a brave knight called Ser Duncan the Tall aka ‘Dunk’ and his young squire ‘Egg’ who becomes the future King Aegon V Targaryen.
On his website Not A Blog, Martin gave fans many details of what to expect from the show including the actors who had been cast in the central roles. Former rugby player Peter Claffey will portray Ser Duncan the Tall while child actor Dexter Sol Ansell will play the young King Aegon V Targaryen.
The writer took the opportunity to also address the physicality of the lead character to give fans some clarity after he sensed a few criticisms regarding this aspect. While he termed Claffey as tall and therefore a good fit for the role, he admitted that it was obviously not possible for him to attain the extraordinary height required for Ser Duncan.
Having said that, the author assured his fans that this difference would not be conspicuous thanks to technology that could do wonders to transform the appearance of anyone based on the requirements of the role. He also spoke highly of his lead actor and said,
”His readings were terrific. I think you’re going to love him.”
Martin also lauded Ansell as the perfect choice for Egg and revealed that he was wise beyond his years. He was confident that the two actors would feed off each other and make a perfect pair in the show.
This Show’s Finale Impressed George R. R. Martin More Than Game Of Thrones
HBO’s Game Of Thrones will go down as one of television’s cult classics thanks to author George R.R. Martin’s memorable writing and vision. The series showcased many unforgettable episodes and finales over 8 seasons that took audiences worldwide by storm.
Interestingly, Martin who was asked to comment on his favorite shows, chose another award-winning HBO drama Six Feet Under for giving viewers one of the best endings ever on television. Referring to the season 5 finale titled Everyone’s Waiting, Martin wrote in Not A Blog,
“The best finale in the entire history of television, and I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly do better.”
The author was lavish in his praise for the show and other series including Breaking Bad, Fargo, and Rome and gracefully accepted that he had healthy competition when asked to comment on Vanity Fair’s list of 25 best episodes from series over the past 25 years.
“I have never claimed to be perfect”
George R.R Martin also named other shows like Blackwater and The Wire among his list of favorites, and expressed gratitude that a second season episode of Game of Thrones was included in the elite top 25 list.
All 8 seasons of Game of Thrones can be streamed on Max.
