What makes the possibility of such an even grander is that Nolan himself once stated how interested he is in dabbling his hands within the horror genre. During a conversation with the British Film Institute (via X), the Oscar-winning director stated,
“I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices. It’s really about [provoking] a visceral response to things. So at some point, I’d love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea — and those are few and far between. So I haven’t found the story that lends itself to that. But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view.”
So while Nolan might not have found the perfect horror movie to make, Scott Derrickson has found the perfect book that the Oscar-winning director can adapt into a cinematic experience like no other. Scott Derrickson is no less than an auteur in modern cinema. Known for his many works within the horror genre, the director has created some of the most impeccable movies within the genre. Thus as a director who knows the ins and outs of such a niche, Derrickson believes Christopher Nolan would be better suited when it comes to adapting House of Leaves.
The 2000 published novel by Mark Z. Danielewski, is one of the best-selling novels of the horror genre. No less than a literary puzzle, the novel itself is a huge challenge to conventional storytelling thanks to its unconventional structure involving works of metafiction and epistolary. Such is the novel, that even reading and understanding is a challenge in itself, let alone creating a live-action adaptation.

Even though the Doctor Strange director himself reckons that a faithful adaptation would be impossible, he wants Nolan to take on the challenge and push the boundaries of cinema even further. If there’s anyone who can do House of Leaves justice, it’s Christopher Nolan!
