Elden Ring has a vast and cryptic lore, thanks to Miyazaki’s collaboration with George R. R. Martin. While Miyazaki worked on the game’s story and characters, Martin created the overall mythology for Elden Ring. His narrative was the backstory that set the events of the game.

Surprisingly, Miyazaki added that Martin crafted the characters in the lore as humans. He then said,

“When Martin wrote these characters, and when he provided that origin story, that mythos for the world of Elden Ring, these demigods were much closer to their original form, and maybe closer to human form back then, before the Shattering, before it all started”

However, things changed when Miyazaki and his team took on the task of making these characters fit into the game. Changes had to be made to Martin’s characters so that they become a perfect fit for the game’s bosses. He then added,

“So it was more up to us to interpret this and say, ‘how did they become such inhuman monsters”

For Miyazaki, the catastrophic Shattering event justified the changes made for the characters. He, however, added that Martin would be shocked by what they did with the characters of Elden Ring. He wrote the characters for the lore with the idea that they should be a little bit more human, and have some elements of human drama to them.
