Cobra Kai Season 6 trailer has revealed that Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi had buried some secrets before his death. Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso will uncover these secrets of his seemingly perfect master, which causes him some emotional conflict. As Daniel and Johnny prepare their students for the Sekai Taikai, the new plot point will surely present a challenge to the original Karate Kid hero.

In fact, the new turn of events in the series may have been a result of Macchio constantly asking the writers to give him something more to work with than the rivalry with Johnny Lawrence. He wanted the writers to give him a new challenge that throws him off balance and gives an intriguing element to the final season of the show.

During an interview with ScreenRant ahead of the premiere of Cobra Kai Season 6 on Netflix, Ralph Macchio opened up about the new Mr. Miyagi twist in the tale. He shared that he was thrilled to see the new arc in Season 6 and added that he had been “banging the drum loudly” to the writer’s room for something like this.
He shared that he had discussed with the writers about what they could bring to the story other than the rivalry with William Zabka‘s Johnny Lawrence. He was looking for ideas that would challenge him, and at the same time, make the show not overstay its welcome. He wanted an arc that would set him off his axis in the new season. He shared with ScreenRant:
I loved it. I always, at the start of each season banging the drum loudly toward the writers room, saying, ‘What could we find to give LaRusso that is not so put together, besides Johnny Lawrence frustrating him, and them going at each other’s throats? How do we not overstay our welcome in those areas? And how can we mine some new information that sets him off his axis, or out of balance?’
Finding the new information about Mr. Miyagi was the perfect arc to throw Daniel off balance, particularly at a time when he should be concentrating on Sekai Taikai. Macchio revealed that it was a new layer of emotional conflict for the character, who would wonder about his master, “‘Why didn’t he tell me?’ and ‘What is this about?’ and ‘Is this real?'”
The New Mr. Miyagi Narrative Sets Up A Perfect Ending For Cobra Kai

Cobra Kai tapped on the overarching theme of the Karate Kid franchise, the rivalries between different martial arts styles, to build a great story over its five seasons. Mr. Miyagi’s secrets may reveal an ancient rivalry between his own style and Kim Sun-Yung’s technique. It could mean that Daniel and Johnny’s rivalry had begun decades before both of them were even born.
This could be a crucial piece of information as the series comes to an end after the three-part sixth season. Macchio believes the Miyagi arc to be a great narrative story and believes that it perfectly creates the conflict that would keep the show entertaining. Macchio shared with ScreenRant:
I think it’s a great narrative story, and we figured out a way that it entertains, creates conflict, and sort of takes Daniel down this path that he has to come back from, and he learns from it. He’s better at the end of it for the journey. I can’t go into details, but it’s an exciting and thought-provoking narrative for what is almost 13 episodes of the entire season 6.
Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 1 will begin streaming on Netflix on July 18. The second part will come out on November 28. The final part will be released in 2025.
