He captured the awkwardness of a teenage Peter, the burden of responsibility after tragedy, and the thrill of wielding incredible power. His portrayal is considered a classic, remembered for its relatable hero and organic swinging through the New York City skyline.

Also, he was someone who went through a body transformation for his role way before it became a trend for the actors who play superhero roles to make a shredded physique.

Tobey Maguire Set The Trend of Body Transformation for Superhero Roles Way Before It Became a Thing

It has become a trend for the actors to look bulk up and shredded to bring the larger-than-life superhero characters to life. Even if the studio does not pressure them to do so, it comes from the actors themselves to look powerful as per the characters’ demand. Be it Chris Hemsworth in Thor, Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther, or Natalie Portman’s much-talked-about bulging biceps as Mighty Thor, they go through a lot of personal training to build a strong and muscled shape to bring those iconic characters onto screen.

Tobey Maguire, meanwhile, started this trend of buffed-up body way back in 2002 when he decided to don the rubbery red and blue Spidey suit for Marvel Studios. He worked out six days a week for months on end and carefully planned five daily meals to look like a proper superhero, though the role was not a typical action-hero.

Speaking with cinema.com, the actor said that he spent six months taking martial arts, weight training, and an intensive gymnastics program.

I wasn’t able to eat that much for a long time. But for someone like me who wasn’t exactly a fitness freak, it was a chance of a lifetime to work with top trainers in different disciplines to get in great shape. I’m going to try to stay buff as long as I can, but it takes a lot of discipline and staying away from your favorite junk food!”

Maguire’s dedication played a huge role in the success of the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. The massive popularity of the Raimi trilogy boosted public interest in superhero stories. This, in turn, encouraged studios to invest more heavily in the genre, leading to the current dominance of superhero blockbusters.

Sam Raimi Spoke on the Potential Reunion with Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man 4

Tobey Maguire made his return to the big screen as Spider-Man in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield. His Spider-Man 4 was canceled in 2010 after years of being stuck in development. One of the reasons for the cancelation was Sam Raimi’s withdrawal from the project.
