When the second act in the Star Wars game series, Survivor, launched on April 28, 2023, it came with a lot of questions and mystery surrounding it. The game effectively used the formula of the series’ first iteration to make it even better and grander.
However, it still left some questions unanswered. The journey of Cal Kestis in particular, played by actor Cameron Monaghan in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, aroused a lot of curiosity in the fans’ minds. Addressing the issue, the Game Director, Stig Asmussen in an interview with Dexerto, spilled some beans.
A Star Wars game trilogy was the vision
The game director revealed what he was thinking before Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was a reality. Asmussen revealed that while the team was working on the first game, Fallen Order, he imagined himself leading the development of his own Star Wars trilogy of games.
He said,
“Sequel discussions were happening even before Jedi: Fallen Order was released in 2019. I always wanted to see this as a trilogy.”
The first game received notable sales figures and critical acclaim. Similarly, the sequel also turned out to be a great success. This had the fans wondering if EA could really take things to the next level by delivering another smashing hit in the form of a third and final act.
From a business perspective, it would be a great decision to make a sequel for Cal’s journey and witness another great hit. However, the game director thinks otherwise. He says,
“It’s tough to speculate on something in the future like that. I think of things in trilogies and a lot of that is because of Star Wars. It’s kind of just my approach. When I worked on the God of War series, that’s where we ended Kratos’ journey.”
He adds that just like any of his other projects, since the early days of working on this iconic IP, he envisioned a trilogy, which is simply how he operates. He also added how the studio is always looking for opportunities, but is also focused on what’s present.
What happens in Survivor?
Asmussen shares how in the final moments of Fallen Order, Cal and his ragtag group of friends are seen sticking together. They then set out on their next adventure in the galaxy far away, after which the series takes a leap of five years.
However, five years later, the Jedi finds himself lonely and alone, apart from the ever-adorable BD-1 companion on his shoulder. Thus. the developers wanted to explore more about what exactly happened in that five-year gap.
The Game Director shared that these questions were intentionally left unanswered in the first part. The developers wanted to answer the questions about Greez, Cere, and Merrin parting ways to split up the Mantis crew in the sequel that follows.
He also revealed that the five-year-leap was actually not “always” part of the plan. However, the team “liked the idea” of leaping forward after the first act and watching Cal as a more seasoned Jedi. Hence, it was implemented.
Thus, for now, Cal’s future continues to hang in the balance. Undoubtedly, a third entry has been in talks for quite some time, with recent reports suggesting that it is making good progress.
