Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s legal drama became one of the most talked about topics last year. The long-running courtroom drama was highly publicized and presented different sides of this problematic marital relationship. But finally, as the defamation case gets its docuseries titled Depp v. Heard, the reception is quite different from what was expected.
Johnny Depp’s courtroom drama against former wife Amber Heard sent the entire internet into a frenzy last year. With many opinions and social commentary, almost every platform became a stage for the fans to keep their views. However, the latest docuseries gets it all wrong as an eye-witness elucidates how the series swayed far away from the truth.

How did the docuseries fail to show the truth of the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial?
Last year, the Pirates of the Caribbean star collided against his former wife Amber Heard in Fairfax County Court in Virginia over an op-ed published in The Washington Post. After Johnny Depp was accused of domestic violence, his career suffered a major blow until the long-running Defamation Trial turned the tables. But looks like the Netflix series has opted for a very different narrative as an eye-witness of the trial raised questions on the authenticity of the series.
Social media influencer Dell’Olio who has seen most of it from ground zero described that the Netflix series exaggerated the drama from the very first scene. She is a victim of domestic violence herself and stated that the documentary presented it as a wilder circus than the situation was.
“I’m a domestic violence survivor, so this is a very, very important case to me. The first thing that hit me in the first literal 30 seconds was, ‘Oh my God, they’re just showing the crowd outside the courtroom.’ And they didn’t show that at the beginning for at least the first I believe it was like three weeks. It was not a circus.”
According to her, it was in the fourth week when it started to attract the masses. As a result, she also couldn’t make it to the court during the last two weeks. It was then that the serious legal drama transitioned into a fan event and if her words are to be believed then the documentary also focuses on this narrative as well and doesn’t show how things were quite different in the initial days.
“We’ve been following this case for years. We’re interested in this case. So that really struck me that they never showed how thin the crowds were and honestly, in the courtroom when it got started, you know?”
Dell’Olio also compared the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard drama to the much-publicized O.J. Trial. But she criticized the series of showing an uncontrollable nature of the court which was not the scenario. She also added how Depp v. Heard played a lot of sensationalized social media clips and didn’t stay respectful to a serious matter of domestic violence.
Is Depp v. Heard an unnecessary take on the trial?
The social media influencer further added that the series took testimonies from both sides and presented a coherent story. It was edited in such a way that made no sense. They tried to portray the scenario as a love story though in reality, it was a shocking revelation of lies.
“The timeline jumped around an awful lot. They also made it seem like Amber and Johnny’s testimonies of how they met and how their romantic relationship began matched up. And that’s not the case at all. And in court, I was shocked that even that didn’t match the other. Like somebody is lying constantly. I was really shocked. They just made it seem like it’s a seamless, love story of how they came to be. And it’s certainly not.”
The reviews received by the documentary also suggest how the whole series looks superficial and deviates from the truth. Several audiences, critics, and ardent followers of Johnny Depp have bashed the show and called it an unnecessary take on the trial, more than enough details of which is already out there.

Some have also criticized the series for not focusing on crucial tidbits about the trial. The Guardian also pointed out how the simplification of major legal details resulted in a biased opinion regarding the case. On the other hand, many trusted sources also questioned the depth of the series.
