Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web has been released today worldwide amidst very low hype and anticipation from audiences. The film also weirdly had only one trailer released by Sony which was not a good sign. Additionally, the fact that the review embargo was released a day before its release made things even worse.
The cast of the film including Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and Isabella Merced have been extensively promoting the film. However, Johnson has claimed in one of the interviews that the script of the film went through big changes from the time she signed on, to what is being released in theatres.
Dakota Johnson Admits Drastic Changes Were Made in Madame Web’s Script
Dakota Johnson is leading the ensemble cast of Madame Web and chronicles the origin story of the clairvoyant who is mostly known as a supporting character in the Spider-Man lore. The cast promoted the film extensively talking about the film and preparing for playing superheroes for the first time. Johnson was particularly star in a big comic book film.
However, the actress revealed one detail about her production that has been a problematic aspect of a studio film like this. Johnson told The Wrap that the film’s script went through a drastic change throughout filming. The actress claimed that she did not know what these changes were and just trusted her director’s vision. She said,
“There were drastic changes. And I can’t even tell you what they were”
It is not a good sign when the actress does not even know what changes were made to the film in which she is the lead. This explains the criticism from most fans who called the film inconsistent and clunky. The reviews of the film have been horrible and it remains to be seen how it performs at the box office.
Dakota Johnson Was Extremely Nervous Working on A CGI Heavy Film
Before Madame Web, Dakota Johnson mainly starred in indie dramas and it was her first foray into a big studio film where she played a comic book character. Working in a green/ blue screen environment was a new experience for the actress and it made her extremely nervous.
She told Entertainment Weekly that the experience was ‘psychotic’ as she did not know whether the scene would even work. However, she trusted her director S.J. Clarkson, and followed her directions with the hope that she did a decent job in those sects. She said,
“I trusted her so much. I’ve never really done a movie where you are on a blue screen, and there’s fake explosions going off, and someone’s going, ‘Explosion!’ and you act like there’s an explosion. That to me was absolutely psychotic. I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an okay job!’ But I trusted her. She works so hard, and she has not taken her eyes off this movie since we started.”
Unfortunately, audiences have not enjoyed the film, with some even claiming that it is worse than Jared Leto’s Morbius. Things are not looking good for Madame Web and it might become a disaster at the box office.
