Nolan praised the series for its unique nature, calling The Curse, unlike anything he had ever seen on television before. He complimented the show in the following words:

“There are so few shows that come along that genuinely have no precedents. I mean, you’re going back to things like ‘Twin Peaks’ or ‘The Prisoner’ or Dennis Potter’s ‘Singing Detective’ — things like that. So you’re in an amazing space, and I can’t wait for audiences to catch up with the climax.”

Nolan pointed out that The Curse could not be compared to any other television show because it does not follow any preexisting formula. The Oppenheimer director also stated that he enjoyed watching the show and lauded co-creator Nathan Fielder, particularly because the series marks his first foray into scripted television.

Christopher Nolan Discussed The Curse‘s Inexplicable Tone

During the Q&A session, Nolan also spoke about what excited him about the series the most. Nolan expressed that he felt a show like The Curse could only be made in the anarchy of the streaming era because the series is different from most of the standard television shows.

Nolan highlighted the show’s tone as its star and stated the following:

“It’s a show where (the) tone is the star. (The) tone is sort of the point of it in a way so I’d like to know… is that something was that a conscious thing uh and how do you arrive at that time.”

Benny Safdie, who worked with Nolan on Oppenheimer, admitted that the tone was intentionally kept inexplicable. Fielder added that getting the tone of the show right was crucial in determining its sense of humor. The Curse premiered on Showtime on November 12, 2023. The ten-episode first season aired its season finale on January 14, 2024.
