Amongst the actresses considered, Michelle Pfeiffer had been heavily rumored to portray the role of the lead character. Well, Pfeiffer rejected the offer because she felt that the film was too evil to portray. As per the actress, she did not want to put that evil out there since she was uncomfortable with the ending.

“With ‘Silence of the Lambs,’ I was trepidatious. There was such evil in that film. The thing I most regret is missing the opportunity to do another film with Jonathan [Demme]. It was that evil won in the end, that at the end of that film evil ruled out. I was uncomfortable with that ending. I didn’t want to put that out into the world.”

After Michelle Pfeiffer rejected the role, the director of the movie Jonathan Demme offered the role to the Sleepless in Seattle actress Meg Ryan who also went on to reject the role because she could never do a movie like that.
