Hollywood star Jon Hamm has graced the screen in several movies, including the likes of Top Gun: Maverick and Baby Driver. However, the actor is highly known for starring in the seven-season AMC TV series Mad Men. Starring Hamm alongside an ensemble cast including January Jones and Christina Hendricks, the period drama follows one of New York’s most prestigious ad agencies in the 1960s.
The Emmy-winning actor started his career in the mid-90s and had his big break in the TV series. However, after portraying the character of Don Draper in the four seasons of the series, the actor shared his concerns about getting older in comparison to newcomers like Robert Pattinson, whose The Twilight Saga took Hollywood by storm.
Jon Hamm Felt Older in Comparison to Robert Pattinson
After his appearance in the 2005 Harry Potter film, Robert Pattinson became a teen heartthrob portraying the role of Edward Cullen in the Twilight film series. However, the young star also caused insecurities in the Mad Men star Jon Hamm, who shared the same during a 2011 interview.
The AMC period drama was just renewed for another three seasons. While he shared that he was grateful for the show’s success and popularity, he also stated that he believed it should end after seven seasons, as he had played the character for four years already. He said, as per IMDb
“I’m 40, which is ridiculously old in Hollywood. I mean, come on, I’m not in ‘Twilight’. I could play their grandfather or something. It’s crazy that this has happened. I’m a very, very lucky human being.”
Hamm took the opportunity to highlight the prevalence of ageism in Hollywood at the time, as he pointed out that the industry gives precedence to the young actors instead of the experienced. Despite that, the actor expressed his gratefulness and appreciation for everything he has achieved while describing it as a stroke of luck.
Jon Hamm Lost the Role of Batman to Robert Pattinson
Ben Affleck portrayed the DC superhero Batman in Zack Snyder’s DCEU. However, the actor soon shared his disinterest in playing the character, leading the 52 years old actor Jon Hamm to show an interest in portraying the Caped Crusader.
He took up a serious interest in landing the role in Matt Reeves‘ The Batman. However, the filmmaker was looking forward to bringing the inexperienced superhero on the screen with a young actor. And Hamm’s age became an issue for the actor taking the lead in The Batman.
The role later went to the Twilight star Robert Pattinson, who has been praised for his performance, and Matt Reeves’ take on DC’s Dark Knight became a commercial and critical success, grossing over $770 million at the box office. Pattinson is all set to reprise his role as Batman in the upcoming sequel to the 2022 film.
Mad Men is available on Prime Video.
The Batman is available on Max.
