Ricky Gervais is no stranger to flak, for he has received many years of being a standup comedian for his brutal and fearless comedic monologues. Even while hosting prestigious award shows like the Golden Globes, the comedian has refused to back down from his unapologetic comedy. While many love him for it, the celebrated actor and filmmaker, Tom Hanks is not a fan. And the reason is what transpired at the 2020 Golden Globe.

While introducing the presenters, Gervais had stated (via The Independent),

“What can I say about our next two presenters? The first is an actor, producer and director whose movies have grossed over $3.5bn at the box office. He’s won two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes for his powerful and varied performances, starring in such films as Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Apollo 13 and Saving Private Ryan. The other… is Tim Allen.”

This did not bear well with Hanks, who later replied,

“We remember when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian – neither of which he is now.”

While Gervais had no reply to give, he later stated that there was no malice intended in a separate interview with The Independent.

After the moment at the Golden Globes of 2020, Rocky Gervais appeared on the popular Stuff of Legends podcast, where he went on to comment about the whole Tom Hanks-Tim Allen situation and what transpired on the show.

“The big meme was Tom Hanks going: ‘Why is he saying that?’ “And people are going, ‘Oh, look, he’s on his high horse.’ But when Leonardo DiCaprio laughed, people loved him for it. I think people who laugh at a joke, they get a round of applause because people go, ‘Oh that’s good, they can take it,’ we don’t want people to be above it. We even let people be privileged as long as they say, ‘I know I’m privileged but I’m nothing really,’ we don’t like people to go ‘Oh I deserve it, how dare you talk to me like that.’”

He talked about the whole situation while also remarking,

“I could say a lot worse things about them, but I don’t want it to get really nasty and for no reason.”

Despite all this controversy, the comedian remains as unhinged as ever, continuing to deliver his iconic monologues without a hint of fear.
