But the Black Widow star was disappointed when she lost her audition for the 2012 musical Les Misérables. During an interview with Broadway.com, Johansson opened up about auditioning for the movie and losing the offer to the Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway.
Scarlett Johansson Failed Her Les Misérables Audition
The 2012 musical drama Les Misérables follows a former prisoner Jean Valjean, trying to build a new life for himself when he encounters Fantine and vows to take care of her daughter. The story follows the struggles and redemption of various characters, including Fantine, a mother, and struggling factory worker, portrayed splendidly by Anne Hathaway.
However, the role almost went to the Marvel star Scarlett Johansson as she also auditioned for the character. During an interview with Broadway.com, she revealed that she sang her heart out during the audition, but lost it as she “auditioned with laryngitis.”
“I did everything I could to, like, not have laryngitis,” she shared. However, she still missed out on the role and it eventually went to The Princess Diary star Anne Hathaway. Laryngitis is a flu that causes huskiness in voice and difficulty in speaking.
While she lost the role due to the huskiness in her voice, she has also said that no other actor could top Hathaway’s performance in the movie. “There’s no possible way I ever could have topped that performance [by Anne Hathaway]. It was perfect,” she stated further during the interview.
Scarlett Johansson’s Husky Voice Got in Her Way Many Times
Scarlett Johansson has shared that she wanted to work in musical theatre, and this was the reason she also trained as a singer. However, she was not able to land many offers due to her signature husky voice. The Ghost in the Shell star shared that she was constantly asked if she had a “sore throat” during most of her auditions.
It was one of the biggest disadvantages for the actress every time she went in for an audition. However, the huskiness in her voice, which was once an issue for her, has become her trademark over the years. Along with her gorgeous and s*xy looks, the actress also has a “trademark husky voice,” which makes her stand out in the crowd.
