“I had been bullied at school. They called me Blubber. Teased me for wanting to act. Locked me in the cupboard. Laughed at me.”

Due to her being overweight, other kids used to make fun of her. Even her acquaintances mocked her looks which made her conscious at some point since she never saw any ‘fat’ actresses in Hollywood.

“I was fat,” she shared. “I didn’t know any fat famous actresses, and I just did not see myself in that world at all, and I’m very sincere. You know, once a fat kid, always a fat kid. Because you always think that you just look a little bit wrong or a little bit different from everyone else. And I still sort of have that.”

She chose to keep on chasing her aim despite the hardships. But, got another bump once again at the age of 14.

The 47-year-old actress in 2016 further throw light on her younger years stating that she was even discouraged by her drama teacher for her acting dreams when she was just 14.

“When I was younger, when I was 14, I was told by a drama teacher that I might do OK if I was happy to settle for the fat girl parts.”

To think that then-aspiring actress getting such harsh remarks for her future would have highly affected her spirits but she chose to remain hopeful.

“So what I always feel in these moments is that any young woman who has ever been put down by a teacher, by a friend, by even a parent, just don’t listen to any of it. Because that’s what I did – I kept on going, and I overcame my fears and got over my insecurities.”

She decided to keep her head high for the dreams she was passionate about. Ignoring all the negative remarks she received in her childhood and staying on track with her acting path led her closer to her dreams. She got a massive break with Titanic where she played the lead role of Rose opposite Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack. The film was a major success globally with a worldwide total of $2.257 billion after re-releases.
