One of the best-selling manga series of all time Hunter x Hunter created by Yoshihiro Togashi is a fan favorite not only for its epic storylines but also for the brilliant characters and world-class fight scenes. The series has been a massive critical and financial success, with over 84 million copies in circulation by July 2022. All of the credit for the success of the series goes to the creator Togashi. He started working on mangas at a young age before being discovered by the publishing business Shueisha while still in college. Togashi has written various manga series in a variety of genres during the last three decades. He is likely best known for writing and drawing the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter series.

However, the main reason behind the creation of Hunter x Hunter is completely different from any other manga or anime series. It was developed as an act of revenge by Togashi against his editors.

Yoshihiro Togashi Hated His Editors

In an interview with Hard Drive, when asked about his favorite character from YuYu Hakusho, Togashi stated that he loved Kuwabara, however, his editors did not let him include the character in the final arc. Kazuma Kuwabara, also known by his last name Kuwabara, is one of the series’ primary characters, along with Yusuke Urameshi, Kurama, and Hiei. Shizuru Kuwabara’s younger brother is him. He also wishes to become Yukina’s lover. Kuwabara is constantly described as ignorant and unattractive. He is, nonetheless, highly loyal to his friends and adheres to a rigid code of honor.

However, despite being one of the main characters of the series, Kuwabara was not included in the last arc. This was majorly the decision of the editors which resulted in Togashi developing hatred for them. This hatred resulted in the creation of one of the best-selling mangas Hunter x Hunter, which probably became more famous than YuYu Hakusho.

Hunter x Hunter was an act of Revenge by Yoshihiro Togashi

During the interview with Hard Drive, Togashi explained how his hatred for his editors of YuYu Hakusho resulted in him developing the story of Hunter x Hunter. He said:

“Kuwabara, obviously. I still resent my editors to this day for not letting me include him in the final story arc. Hunter × Hunter is a response to them, which is to say, ‘I do what I want, when I want, how I want it. Got that suckers?’”
