Although it may not seem possible, the legendary Jim Carrey turned 61 this year. Maybe he is growing a little more grumpy as he gets older and wiser—at least, that is what some of his fans would argue. For many years, audiences have enjoyed the comedic timing and quirky personas of the endearing and charismatic The Mask star. But unlike many Hollywood stars, the Canadian-American actor and comedian is unwavering in his commitment to pleasing his audience.
The actor, who rose to fame in 1990 with Keenen Ivory Wayans’ In Living Color (1990–1994), once said he was not afraid that one day his fans would not acknowledge him. Fans often mistake the actor for his on-screen persona rather than who he truly is—a human being like the rest of us.
What Would Jim Carrey Do If No One Ever Recognized Him?
Fans often make this mistake when they believe the actor they see on screen is their real persona. That is the case with Jim Carrey, who, as we have shown, is far more serious than his on-screen roles. However, the actor has the audacity to defy fandom norms and admit that he would not mind if no one ever recognized him.
Carrey acknowledged the following in a previous Goalcast interview:
“I don’t think I would be that different, honestly. I dropped the whole trying to be something for somebody a long time ago, so pretty much walk through the world except when I want to be funny. Or I wanna do something outrageous. I don’t have any trouble being myself. And I don’t have any trouble saying no when I mean no.”
The Dumb and Dumber star also admitted that he just wanted to accept himself for who he is and has never felt the need to “please everyone”. In addition, he has the view that taking selfies “stop” life. To quote him:
“I don’t feel there’s a pressing responsibility to please everyone. I’m not unkind to people; I love people. I would much prefer saying ‘Hello’ and ‘Who are you’ and ‘What are you doing today’ than taking a selfie. Because selfies stop life. You go (contort his face), ‘Eeehh.’ And then it’s going on Instagram to give people a false sense of relevance. Everybody was so gaga about Steve Jobs, but I picture him in hell running from demons who want a selfie.”
The Mask Actor Hates Taking Photos With Fans?
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, his co-star in Dumb and Dumber, took part in a joint interview for Screen Slam in 2014. Naturally, the topic of fame came up, and the two actors shared how uncomfortable it used to be to have their pictures taken with fans.
The Canadian-American actor expressed his feelings quite openly, saying:
“The hard part about this — and it’s true of all people — is that everybody is a bit myopic in their life. And they think about what they want and what they need. So if somebody comes up and asks if they can get a quick picture, and there are a 100 people around… they all have [a phone]. I try to say, ‘I can’t right now because everyone has one. And then the rest of my night I’ll be like Santa at Macys. My night will be destroyed.’”
Well, Carrey declared in April 2022 that he was thinking about leaving the movie business. We last saw him as Dr. Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, an action-adventure comedy film based on Sega’s video game series. It is the follow-up to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), directed by Jeff Fowler.
