Anti-Marvel stance has been prominent in the industry in recent years, especially from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. While Scorsese didn’t consider Marvel as proper cinema, Tarantino shared that, in Marvel movies, only the franchise characters were stars and not the actors. Thor actor Chris Hemsworth was not happy about such comments from the legendary filmmakers and shared that he may not work with either of them.

Many fans side with the two directors’ comments on the nearly $30 billion-dollar franchise. However, for many others, the Marvel movies were much more than just “theme parks” and Hemsworth’s disappointment at these comments was understandable.

Chris Hemsworth revealed in an interview with British GQ that he was quite disappointed to hear the anti-Marvel stance from Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. For Hemsworth, these directors were his heroes in the industry. He added that since they were not fans of the actor, he wouldn’t be working with either of them. Hemsworth played one of the original six Avengers, Thor, in the MCU.

Hemsworth shared that he didn’t like when people started to scrutinize each other’s work, especially with the fragile state of the film business. The Extraction actor did not comment on whether the “Marvel-ization” of movies as Tarantino accuses is a real thing. He also revealed that he was grateful for his Marvel films which helped keep people in cinemas. Hemsworth shared with British GQ:

“I’m thankful that I have been a part of something that kept people in cinemas. Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of other films, I don’t know. I don’t love when we start scrutinizing each other when there’s so much fragility in the business and in this space of the arts as it is.”

Despite their ill comments about Marvel, Chris Hemsworth still considers Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino as his heroes. However, in the broader opinion around the discussion, he chose to stand with Marvel which gave him his break-out role.

Tarantino shared with the 2 Bears 1 Cave podcast that the franchise characters like Captain America or Thor were considered the stars over actors Chris Evans or Hemsworth. Scorsese told Empire Magazine that the closest he could think of Marvel movies was as theme parks. He added that these movies failed to convey the emotional and psychological interactions of human beings.

Chris Hemsworth’s last appearance as Thor was in the Taika Waititi film, Thor: Love and Thunder. The film failed to match up to the success of its predecessor due to its shabby humor and poor VFX work. It was among the lowest-rated films in the MCU. During his interview with GQ, Hemsworth revealed that he played different versions of his character throughout the years.

He shared that the character from Thor 1 and 2 were different from Thor 3 and 4. Then, he played the character in Avengers films, including the Lebowski Thor. He did something different every time because he got sick of the character pretty quickly every couple of years. Hemsworth shared with GQ:

“I love the experience. I love the fact that I’ve been able to do something fairly different throughout the process. Thor 1 and 2 were their own thing, Thor 3 and 4 were a very different feel… and then even Avengers, the Lebowski Thor, the Infinity War Thor, due to different directors and I think mostly my own need to do something different. You know, I got sick of the character pretty quick every couple of years.”

A potential Thor 5 film may or may not happen, but Hemsworth appears to be running out of variations to play. It seems like a break will suit the actor better after donning the role for more than a decade. Thor films and other Marvel projects are now available for streaming on Disney+.
