Seeing the movie one would not believe that Mark Wahlberg is a devout catholic. Back in 2015, when Wahlberg attended a ceremony where Pope Francis was in attendance, he could not help but crack a slight joke about his movie Ted. But he was soon left disappointed as the Pope did not seem to know who Wahlberg was.

Back in 2015, the Transformers star, Mark Wahlberg got the chance to attend the World Meeting Of Families in Philadelphia. Attended by numerous members of the Clergy, the meeting was held in the presence of Pope Francis who was on a tour of the United States at that time. Despite Wahlberg being a devout catholic, the actor could not help but crack a joke about his raunchy comedy, Ted.

When Wahlberg was congratulating an opera singer for his angelic performance, he was caught off guard when the young man unexpectedly praised the actor. Turning to the audience, Wahlberg explained,

“That right there was truly the voice of an angel. But then he whispered in my ear that he loved the movie Ted, and I told him that was not appropriate for a boy of his age. Holy Father, please forgive me. I’ve always hoped that the good Lord has a sense of humor when it comes and pertains to many of the movies that I’ve made.”

Whether the Good Lord has a sense of humor or not, we can’t tell, but the Pope surely did not. While the audience quipped in laughter, Pope Francis set expressionless. And the Ted star was left kind of devastated knowing the Pope did not know him or hadn’t seen his movies to understand the context.

“It’s nice to meet somebody who doesn’t want to ask you a bunch of questions. He was probably annoyed by me, but it was an honor.”

He went on to remark that it was probably that Pope Francis does not go to the movies or doesn’t even watch television is the reason why he was unaware of Mark Wahlberg’s identity. Well, whether the Pope was annoyed or just didn’t get the context of the joke, we won’t ever know. But fans sure are proud of Wahlberg being always open about his religious beliefs, an unlikely feat in the film industry.

You can stream Ted on Netflix.
