The Relationship That Changed Matt Damon’s Viewpoint
While working on the 1997 film Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon and his co-star Minnie Driver fall for each other. They dated for a year, and the 52-year-old actor even publically his love for Driver just months before declaring that he was single on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Around the same time, he was linked with the American actress Winona Ryder. Although they kept their relationship highly under the radar, things got out soon, and it was revealed that Gwyneth Paltrow, who was dating Ben Affleck, introduced Damon and Ryder.
They were seen attending several public events together. However, the couple called it quits in the spring of 2000, and rumors started that the Jason Bourne star was seeing his All Pretty Horses co-star Penelope Cruz. The rumors were never confirmed.
However, according to Damon, his relationship with the Stranger Things star taught him not to get romantically involved with a celebrity. Talking about his relationship with Ryder, he denied the alleged reasons behind their split and opened up about why he did not plan on seeing celebrities anymore.
Matt Damon Decided Not to Date Celebrities
While the former couple never confirmed anything, reports claimed that the two separated because of Richard Gere’s interest in Ryder, who starred alongside her in the 1999 film Autumn in New York. However, Matt Damon denied such claims during his interview with Playboy.
He also opened up about how the tabloids’ gossip surrounding his relationships took a toll on him. After this, he decided to keep his relationship out of the public eye and shared he did not want to date any celebrities after that.
“[I]f you’re the cover child or the cover couple, then you’re f*cked. And don’t date a celebrity. I don’t think I could fall in love with a celebrity right now.”
He shared that dating a celebrity would require him to change his lifestyle, which he was not very comfortable with. “I like that my lifestyle feels normal to me most of the time,” he said. He would then meet his future wife, Luciana Barroso, in a bar in 2003, and the two got married in a small ceremony in 2005.
