Thandie Newton is known for being outspoken throughout her career. But certainly, the actress had been holding onto a piece of information for quite a long time, only to release it at the right moment. Giving into her vulnerability and speaking about her own career choices, Newton spoke about a renowned filmmaker.
Stating how she vowed to never work with Charlie’s Angels director, Thandie Newton claimed his sleazy ideas are what got her to reject the $264M movie. But surprisingly, Newton isn’t the only Hollywood star who refused to work with the filmmaker. Apparently, Christian Bale has also refused to work with the same director.
Thandie Newton Rejected $264M Movie For Director’s Sleazy Ideas
Being in the entertainment industry for years, Thandie Newton‘s journey hasn’t been quite easy. Struggling with career and fame, the actress spoke out loud about how she got groomed and s*xually abused as a teenager by the director John Duigan. But unfortunately speaking up about it ended up massively affecting her career in two ways.
One, wherein she was constantly dealing with her trauma and failing to focus on work. And the other wherein she would come across people who were doing the same thing again. Speaking with Vulture, Newton thus mentioned how she felt traumatized and humiliated when Charlie’s Angels director Joseph McGinty Nichol approached her and described the opening shot of the movie.
“One of the biggest movies I didn’t end up doing was because the director said to me, ‘I can’t wait for this. The first shot is going to be … You’re going to think it’s like yellow lines down a road, and you pull back and you realize it’s the stitching, because the denim is so tight on your ass it’s going to look like tarmac.’ I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t think we’re going to go down this road together.’”
Thereafter, the actress rejected her role in the $264M movie, which later went to Lucy Liu, who starred alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz.
Christian Bale Insulted Filmmaker After His Regretful Collaboration
While Thandie Newton had a valid reason for feeling humiliated by Joseph McGinty Nichol’s approach, especially after she spoke out loud about her traumas, the actress wasn’t the only one frustrated with the director. Apparently, even Christian Bale had issues with McGinty Nichol after working with him in the critically panned Terminator Salvation.
Portraying the lead character John Connor in the fourth installment of the sci-fi franchise, Christian Bale admitted regretting his decision to sign on to the film. Stating how he only took on the job after an emotional plea from the director, Bale confessed to The Wall Street Journal about having reservations about working with Joseph McGinty Nichol, aka McG.
“[Nichol] goes, ‘Give me a chance. Everyone needs to evolve, and I need to turn over a new leaf. And please, you must’ve been in this position before yourself, when someone has taken a leap of faith on you,’” Bale shared.
But unfortunately, even after Christian Bale took the chance, the movie was poorly received by critics and failed to match the box office success of its predecessors. Thus, the actor was asked if he would work with Joseph McGinty Nichol again. To which Bale replied,
“There’s a lot of room for many approaches and many characters within the film industry. I won’t be working with him again, but I wish him very well.”
Eventually, it appears Thandie Newton and Christian Bale share a common ground when it comes to director Joseph McGinty Nichol.
