Intimate scenes in films are by far the most challenging segments to conquer. To appear natural and comfortable while kissing a co-star involves a lot of preparation behind the scenes as well as being at ease in front of the camera while filming the scene with a large number of crew members present. Hollywood films have boasted of some iconic kissing scenes involving many A-list stars who have managed to create chemistry on-screen.
There have also been times when actors have refrained from kissing their co-stars due to certain trepidations. Hollywood actor Thandie Newton was one celebrity who faced a similar issue with her co-star Gerard Butler on the sets of their film directed by Guy Ritche titled RocknRolla.
Thandie Newton Was Reluctant to Kiss Gerard Butler On Set
In 2008, Thandie Newton and Gerard Butler starred together in Guy Ritche’s RocknRolla. The film made headlines mainly for the casting of two good looking stars who were expected to share a sizzling chemistry together. But the experience of shooting intimate scenes with Butler proved to be a very difficult proposition for Newton owing to the 300 star falling very sick with a terrible cold on set. Speaking of her trepidation to kiss her ill co-star and what ensued after, Thandie Newton said,
“Gerry was very unwell indeed. So I wouldn’t kiss him. Guy had to improvise. I don’t know how he coped with those problems but it ended up being one of the most brilliant scenes.”
An interesting titbit during the filming involved Guy Ritche’s then iconic pop star wife Madonna stepping in to treat Gerard Butler for his ailment by hilariously giving him an injection in his butt. The effort made things even worse for Butler who then managed to work around his sickness to put his best foot forward. The star was nevertheless appreciative of the La Isla Bonita singer for her help.
Kissing Experience With Tom Cruise Was Overrated, Said Thandie Newton
Thandie Newton has worked in her fare share of commercial blockbusters including sharing screen space with industry superstar Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 2. While the franchise was all about giving Cruise the space to shine as an action star, Newton’s role in the film also gave her prominence as one of Hollywood’s go-to leading ladies. The star though confessed that while she enjoyed being part of the action, the intimate scenes with her co-star Cruise were anything but smooth. Describing their kiss as slightly icky and sort of wet,” Newton went on to burst the bubble surrounding intimate sequences in films.
“Well, to take away the mystery and magic of what you see in the movie: you’re lying there, you’ve got 30 people around you, prodding all bits of you to make sure that certain things aren’t being seen and others look good. It’s so clinical, you’re thinking more about whether or not you’re squashing him than kissing him.”
Despite being thrown out of her comfort zone while kissing Tom Cruise, Thandie Newton’s on-screen chemistry with her co-star was lauded by audiences and critics alike. Mission Impossible 2 went on to become one of the highest grossers in the franchise.
