Nicole Kidman was on the verge of retiring from acting during the early 2000s, but she was inspired by someone to continue her passion for acting. The actress, known for her roles in Moulin Rouge and The Hours, planned to settle down after she had a child.

She was previously married to action star Tom Cruise, and being tied to one of the most in-demand actors of all time, she would have felt so burned out from all the press and paparazzi. This was the root cause of why Kidman wanted to quit Hollywood.

Nicole Kidman Reveals She Almost Gave Up Hollywood To Live In A Farm

Speaking with Deadline, actress Nicole Kidman shared she had a lot of thoughts about retiring after she gave birth. The plan was to live quietly in a farm without the attention of the media.

There have been times where I have, and particularly after I gave birth to Sunday Rose I was like, ‘I’m done, I’m going to live on this farm in Nashville and I’m done.’

She also told The Guardian that upon reaching her 40s, she realized the industry was too harsh for her. She wanted to “have my baby and sit on a farm.” But not until her mother told her, “I don’t think you should just give up.” This was all she needed to ignite the lost spark in her.

I was quite convinced I could grow vegetables and be at home and be very satisfied with that, but was pushed quite substantially by my mum. Friends, too – I have friendships that have permeated my life.

Kidman also said that many of her career decisions were encouraged by people close to her. She admitted feeling “not always coming from a sense of confidence.” She meant that “a lot of times I’m relying heavily on the people around to say, ‘You’ve got more in you.’

For someone who worked in the modeling and acting world, it’s quite a surprise to know that Kidman felt tired of the camera always pointing at her.

In an old press conference at the 2003 Cannes via Entertainment Weekly, Kidman warned fans that she was going to retire and that acting wasn’t something she wanted to do forever.

I probably won’t do this for the rest of my life. There are other things to do that interest me, and I think that when I fall in love, that’s when I will stop and settle down.

She surprisingly told the reporters that “this kind of life is a burnout.”  The actress admitted finding herself constantly saying “I can’t do this forever. It will finish in its own time.” At the time, she must have been too exhausted from the onslaught of projects she did and had to promote.

It’s not an uncommon thing, though, for actors to suddenly want to move away from the spotlight. However, in Kidman’s case, she was continuously motivated by her loved ones to not give up, especially her mother. Even today, she’s still appearing in a couple of films and television series.
