Tall women often find it difficult to search for acting jobs that would fit their descriptions because, more often than not, producers and studios look for girls who exude feminine qualities, and that includes small stature. This was Kidman’s problem in the past.

Nicole Kidman Describes The Hardships of Being A Tall Actress

Speaking on The Radio Times podcast, actress Nicole Kidman opened up and shared the struggles of being a 5’11” woman in Hollywood. She admitted that her height got in the way of landing roles and acting gigs.

It’ll bother me when I’m acting and I want to be small, but then there are times when I appreciate it when it’s related to what I’m doing, and I go, ‘OK, I can use this now.’ But a lot of the time, I’m still going, ‘Aw.’ Hey, I’m incredibly grateful to be healthy and walking around. Having said that, I’ve had knee issues and all sorts of things partly because of my height.”

At this point, she has already accepted that she towers above most women and other people around her. In fact, she was much taller than her ex-husband Tom Cruise, who only stood at 5’7”. Kidman confessed people used to discourage her because of her height.

I was told, ‘You won’t have a career. You’re too tall.’ And I remember auditioning for Annie, which was just one of those sort of big callouts, where hundreds and hundreds of people [were there]. I didn’t have an agent or anything. I just sort of showed up.”

She almost did not get to join the audition because they had height requirements. Still, the actress asked for the person in charge to let her in, and they did. Kidman admitted feeling mortified.

It’s crazy to think that a lot of women would give an arm and a leg to have such nice height, though no one should invalidate Kidman’s feelings towards her own stature. In the end, the Bombshell actress managed to accept and appreciate her God-given physicality.

I was afraid of my own power, afraid that it would threaten people, intimidate people. And it’s a great sadness wishing to be less than you actually are. And it’s hard to take on the world when you’re constantly in a battle with yourself. I worked through it… I’m working through it.”

She addressed the issue of women always being susceptible to the societal voice that tells them to do certain things in order to be accepted. In the end, it is their own free will to choose whether to listen to it and succumb to the pressure or put on those heels and walk proudly because one should never wish to be less than they truly are.
