David Letterman was a talk show host for almost 33 years before he retired in 2015 from the interviewer life. During his career, the host has interviewed lots of celebrities including the likes of Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.
During the Kidman interview, Letterman brought up Kidman’s then-recent divorce with Tom Cruise. Joking about Cruise’s average height, the actress had claimed she could finally wear heels again. Letterman in response, hilariously claimed that the comment was going to ‘cost’ Nicole Kidman.
When David Letterman Warned Nicole Kidman
From 1990 to 2001, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise spent 11 married years together before their divorce. With both being famous celebrities, the divorce proved utterly controversial and received a lot of media attention in 2001.
Shortly after their divorce, Nicole Kidman arrived for an interview with David Letterman on the Late Show With David Letterman. During the interview, Letterman couldn’t help but bring up the topic of Kidman’s recent divorce. Nicole Kidman, in response, joked about Tom Cruise’s average height. When Letterman complimented her by saying that she looked fantastic, here’s what Kidman had for a reply.
“Thank you [laughs]. I don’t know how to take [compliments]. Well, I can wear heels now”
As the cheering and the laughing died down, Kidman said “Now we move on!”. On the other hand, Letterman was rubbing his chin and said,
“Wow, that’s going to cost you. That’s pretty funny”
Despite suffering through criticism for the divorce, Nicole Kidman went on to have a successful acting career. Starring in a 2002 film, Kidman went on to win an Oscar for her role as a character she thought was impossible to portray!
When Nicole Kidman Starred In The Hours
Portraying the role of Virginia Woolf in the 2002 movie titled The Hours, Nicole Kidman won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role. When she was given the script initially, the actress revealed to EW that she was very skeptical about the role.
“Well, when I read the script I thought, they can’t want me for Virginia. They must want me for something else. There’s no way I’m going to be able to pull this off. I don’t think I’m right. It’s going to be a disaster.”
She further continued,
“[But then I thought] well, if [‘The Hours’ director] Stephen Daldry believes I can do it, then I have to have some bit of faith. And when do you get a chance as an actress to play older?”
Portraying the iconic role got Kidman her Oscar for Best Actress, and the movie ended up receiving a rating of 7.5/10 on IMDB and a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The 2002 movie is available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S. As for her married love life, the actress found a husband in Keith Urban in 2006 and both have been happily married since.
