Earlier in 2020, Portman had worn a gown with names of female directors written over the cape to bring attention to them. However, the actress was heavily criticized for not working with them, while Kidman still upholds her promise of working with female directors making fans hail her as the real hero as she is all set to star in the movie Babygirl.

Back in 2020, Natalie Portman attended the Oscars wearing a custom handmade Dior gown with the names of eight female directors who were snubbed at the Academy Awards nomination. The actress wanted to make a subtle yet powerful tribute to all female directors.

However, she was heavily criticized and hailed as a hypocrite for advocating for female directors while rarely having worked with them or even hiring them at her production company at that time (via Evoke). While Portman hasn’t worked with any female director since then, back in 2017 Nicole Kidman pledged to work with female directors every 18 months, a promise she has faithfully carried out (via The Guardian).

Ever since then, the acclaimed Hollywood star has worked with numerous female directors across different genres. Recently, it was announced that she is once again set to star in A24’s Babygirl, written and directed by Halina Rejin.

This news once again spurred up the Oscar controversy of Portman, with many on social media hailing Kidman as the true feminist champion. And soon enough, many made comments like (via X),

“She impressively walked the talk.”

“This is how you fight the system, not by wearing a dress with female directors’ names on it.”

“Oh mother, don’t end the other two faced actresses like that.”

While fans are busy defending and rightly glorifying the Big Little Lies star, Kidman is busy preparing for her next thriller.

After vowing and keeping her promise of working with a female director every 18 months, Nicole Kidman is all set to star in Babygirl, an erotic thriller featuring an older CEO who starts an affair with an intern, many years her junior.

A movie set to examine the power dynamic and sexuality within a work setting, the movie is set to begin filming in December 2023 in New York. Apart from Kidman, Harris Dickinson will star as the intern, and Antonio Banderas will portray the role of the husband of Kidman’s character (via Variety).

While most actors complain about the lack of female artists and directors as a reason for their inability to work with them, Nicole Kidman keeps on proving that if there is a will, there is a way.

Babygirl will presumably be released by the end of 2024.
