Leonardo DiCaprio won the first (and only) Oscar of his career so far for the 2016 movie, The Revenant. Though he had been nominated before, he was unable to win the prestigious award until the Alejandro Iñárritu movie brought it to him. Since his 2016 win, DiCaprio was nominated for the Best Actor category once more for the Quentin Tarantino film, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, but lost to Joaquin Phoenix, who won for his role in Joker.

This year, before the nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced, Leonardo DiCaprio was one of the front-runners to get a nomination in the Best Actor category. But Oscars snubs this year have been quite controversial, with one of them being DiCaprio himself. The actor was unable to secure a nomination for his role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).

Leonardo DiCaprio Takes a Jab at Gwyneth Paltrow

Like Leonardo DiCaprio, there is another one-time Oscar winner who was recently brought into the conversation when DiCaprio, Scorsese, and Lily Gladstone sat for an interview with Variety. Taking a jab at Gwyneth Paltrow, who won an Oscar in the Best Actress category for Shakespeare in Love (1998), DiCaprio said that his Oscar is placed on his bookshelf, unlike others who use it as a doorstop.

“I don’t use it as a doorstop.”

This statement was in reference to a video of Paltrow, where people can see her prop open the gate to her Hamptons house during an interview with her Oscar. Maybe it’s just another metal statue to the actress, but DiCaprio probably holds the prestigious award in higher regard.

Lily Gladstone was “Pissed” at Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar Snub

Killers of the Flower Moon has managed to secure 10 Oscar nominations this season, even if Leonardo DiCaprio missed out on his nod this year. While Scorsese has managed to get the tenth Oscar nomination of his career, it is leading lady Lily Gladstone, who made Oscar history as the first Native American woman to secure a nomination in the Best Actress category.

After her win at the Golden Globes, Gladstone is in favor of winning at the Oscars, even if she faces tough competition from actresses like Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Annette Benning, and Sandra Hüller. On DiCaprio’s Oscar snub, Gladstone said that she and her family were “pissed” that he missed out on the nomination. Talking about her family’s reaction to Variety, she said,

“They were pissed. He was the first to text me congratulations, with popping confetti. I told him how upset we all were. My nomination is equal parts his. I would not have been able to do what I did without his generosity as an actor and as a human being.”

Even Martin Scorsese seemed bummed about the fact that his leading man did not get the recognition he deserved. Speaking of the character DiCaprio plays, the director said,

“He went so far into the complexities and contradictions of a man who was so weak, so malleable, who did such unspeakable things, but who also truly loved his wife. Leo fearlessly created a true Everyman … an Everyman that people just don’t want to acknowledge. So that will endure.”

Killers of the Flower Moon is available for streaming on Apple TV Plus.
