Martin Scorsese, an acute perfectionist and one of the masters of crime dramas, is very peculiar about choosing actors for his film. His latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, has an ensemble cast, including his long-time collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and, of course, Lily Gladstone. Gladstone managed to win hearts with her acting and was not overshadowed by the stalwarts.
Scorsese wanted an actress for the film who would be the focal point of the film, and he selected Lily Gladstone purely based on his instincts. Leonardo DiCaprio talked about this aspect to Vogue, saying,
“There was no reading. Marty just instinctively knew Lily was the one. There was a truthfulness in [her] eyes that he saw even over a computer screen. I’ve never known [Scorsese] meet somebody and then immediately afterwards have this gravitational pull and instinct to say, ‘Let’s not wait another minute.‘”

In an interview with Variety, Martin Scorsese revealed one movie of Gladstone that got him and made him decide to hire the actress instantly. When the interviewer brought up the reference to DiCaprio, the Shutter Island actor has said that he has never seen Scorsese doing so, the acclaimed filmmaker said:
“What I saw Lily do in “Certain Women” — how she commanded the space and the screen and the emotional impact of what appeared to be minimal and very internal — that’s what I was looking for. We had just started developing the character, and I felt that Lily had it in her. That she would seriously find her.”
Gladstone, who had a few remarkable titles to her name, including The Last Manhunt, First Cow, herself, believed that it was due to the director’s innate knowledge.
“I think Marty watched Certain Women,” Gladstone said in an interview with Interview Magazine about her landing on the huge role in Scorsese’s crime drama.
The actress is all set to appear in a true Hulu crime series Under the Bridge inspired by the book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey where she will play the role of Cam Bentland, a queer woman of color on the local police force.
