Harrison Ford was intimidated by his co-star in The Fugitive
Hollywood iconic star Harrison Ford has given numerous box office hits in his vast career. The megastar was part of the 1993 action film The Fugitive. The film also starred another action hero of the time, Tommy Lee Jones. It was an action thriller film based on the 1960s television show of the same name created by Roy Huggins. In the movie, Ford played the role of Dr. Richard Kimble, a vascular surgeon on the run, after he was framed for the murder of his wife. Tommy Lee Jones played the role of Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard, who was hunting Harrison Ford’s character.
Film director Andrew Davis shared in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment that the Air Force One star required some reassurance for sharing the screen with Lee Jones. He shared,
“I think Harrison thought, ‘Tommy’s a powerful actor — I don’t want to be in his shadow.'”
The success of the film led to its 1998 spin-off, U.S. Marshals, for which Jones reprised his role as Deputy Marshal Gerard.
Director Andrew Davis was upset Harrison Ford was not nominated for the Oscars
The action thriller was a box office hit and turned out to be a breakthrough performance for both actors, Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. Talking about the casting of the two actors, the director shared that the Under Siege star was a perfect fit for Gerald. He said,
“He’s a fantastic actor, and I thought he would be perfect for Gerard.”
Regarding Ford, he recalled,
“Harrison took a little convincing, but it worked out fine.”
Tommy Lee Jones won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and the film received seven Oscar nominations. The film was acclaimed critically and commercially. The director shared,
“I was upset that Harrison and I didn’t get nominated. But we got seven nominations and it was such a beloved hit. If it wasn’t for Schindler’s List, we may have won Best Picture, I think.”
Davis also appreciated the actors in the superhit film,
“Tommy got a lot of attention, but Harrison did a great job. I think it’s his best role. He plays this real character, and the emotion he brings to it is profound.”
The film grossed nearly $370 million against a budget of $44 million.
The Fugitive is available for streaming on Direct TV and Pluto TV.
