The film industry may appear glamorous from the outside, but it tends to hide a gray area. Previously, French actress Marion Cotillard shed light on the dark side of the industry, where people with authority try to control others.
Cotillard faced one such situation where a director tried manipulating her, and she strongly condemned it. The actress, vivid with her notion, suggested that a relationship between a director and an actor should be collaborative, not manipulative.
Marion Cotillard had a terrible experience on a film set
Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard is a well-established actress who has not just set her foothold in French cinema but has given some incredible performances in Hollywood as well. The actress is known for her impeccable talent and acting skills, however, this wasn’t enough to save her from the odds of the industry.
Previously, during an interview with Variety, the actress revealed the grotesque side of the film industry. The actress shared that she once felt that she was being manipulated by a director, and she highly criticized it.
The actress said that the director convinced her that “it would be a process of working together with a collaborative connection.” However, Cotillard soon realized that the director was trying to manipulate her. The 47-year-old actress said,
“I thought: ‘Is he manipulating me because he thinks that I’m going to be unable to give him what he needs, what he wants, if he doesn’t act this way? And I felt like an object, and I really hated it.”
The actress further said that she sensed all his nasty tactics and claimed them to be dumb. She said,
“It was kind of dumb that you can’t ask me to do things without trying to use ways of manipulation that really don’t work with me, with my personality as a woman, I mean, as a human being, and as an actress.”
Though Cotillard did not reveal the name of the director and moved on with the incident with time, the incident shows that even the respectable actors of the industry become victims of such people and have to face such terrible situations on set.
Marion Cotillard’s opinion on this incident
Marion Cotillard highly condemns such behavior where a person misuses his authority and tries to manipulate people to get their work done. Having closely experienced the situation, the actress has strong opinions on how there is no room for manipulation in an ethical workplace. The actress emphasized that there is a difference between manipulation and an experience of surrender. Cotillard said,
“I think surrender is something that you really need to go through when you’re an actor. You surrender to the character, you surrender to the story, and you surrender to the creator, the director. But it needs to have, for me, a harmony that I don’t think you can find in manipulation.”
Cotillard is once again going to collaborate with Lucile Hadzihalilovic for her upcoming film, La Tour de Glace.
