“I thought: ‘Is he manipulating me because he thinks that I’m going to be unable to give him what he needs, what he wants, if he doesn’t act this way? And I felt like an object, and I really hated it.”

The actress further said that she sensed all his nasty tactics and claimed them to be dumb. She said,

“It was kind of dumb that you can’t ask me to do things without trying to use ways of manipulation that really don’t work with me, with my personality as a woman, I mean, as a human being, and as an actress.”

Though Cotillard did not reveal the name of the director and moved on with the incident with time, the incident shows that even the respectable actors of the industry become victims of such people and have to face such terrible situations on set.

Marion Cotillard highly condemns such behavior where a person misuses his authority and tries to manipulate people to get their work done. Having closely experienced the situation, the actress has strong opinions on how there is no room for manipulation in an ethical workplace. The actress emphasized that there is a difference between manipulation and an experience of surrender. Cotillard said,

“I think surrender is something that you really need to go through when you’re an actor. You surrender to the character, you surrender to the story, and you surrender to the creator, the director. But it needs to have, for me, a harmony that I don’t think you can find in manipulation.”

Cotillard is once again going to collaborate with Lucile Hadzihalilovic for her upcoming film, La Tour de Glace.
