No fandom has seen death quite like the fandom of Game of Thrones. Neither the widely popular television series nor the source material ever shied away from killing people left and right. While some deaths were too gut-wrenching to watch and made viewers shed some serious tears, others were quite satisfying to watch, to say the least.

It’s always good to see the bad guys finally pay the price of their actions with their lives. Bonus points if the death ends up being as gruesome as possible and Game of Thrones is no stranger to this. From Viserys Targaryen to Tywin Lannister, the series rewarded fans with some of the most satisfying deaths to have graced the television industry but which death did the Game of Thrones creators find to be the best amongst them all?

For a lot of fans of Game of Thrones, Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) finally meeting his end was one of the highlights of the entire series. After everything he did during his rule, getting poisoned in front of everyone at his own wedding will never be forgotten.

Another character whose death was thoroughly enjoyed by viewers was the sadistic Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon). Easily one of the most appalling villains of all time, Ramsay’s death was a special treat to the fans who had had enough of his actions, especially since he was devoured by hungry hounds. The masterplan being Sansa Stark’s brainchild was simply the cherry on top!

Game of Thrones creators D. B. Weiss and David Benioff agree that these two deaths were the best, most satisfying of them all. While appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Weiss stated,

“With Thrones, there was so much killing of good guys, and we finally got to really kill both Joffrey in Season 4 and Ramsay Bolton in Season 6. It was fun to go back to the old-fashioned joys of just killing off a really bad guy. … It felt like it was balancing the scales a little.”

However, Ramsay’s death seems to take the cake as Benioff added,

“For me, at the end of ‘Battle of [the] Bastards,’ when Sophie [Turner] sticks the hounds on the Bastard, she doesn’t walk away. You don’t really see the death. You see some of it in the background, but you don’t really see the death. But what you do see is Sophie or Sansa’s smile…It was just that feeling of – that’s so epic. Sophie was so good. When she got that shot, I felt like I can now die happy.””

After unleashing the hounds on her husband, Sophie Turner’s Sansa starts to walk away before deciding to see the event unfold. When she finally does turn her back on Ramsay, her little smile is simply a masterpiece to watch!

In an interview with UPI, Iwan Rheon opened up about his character’s gruesome death and stated that he was quite content with Ramsay’s ending. He laughed, “If you’re going to go, you ought to go in style.” As for the moral question, ‘Did Ramsay deserve what he got?’, Rheon completely agrees.

He stated,

“Barring some kind of dragon-related death, that was as good as it got. And through him being removed, the Starks get back to Winterfell, so, I think for the show and for the narrative, it really was brilliant. He definitely deserved his horrible, horrible ending.”

While Ramsay was being feasted on by his hounds, Rheon was perfectly fine during filming as no real dog came close to the actor. During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Rheon made it clear that the scene was shot with CGI and CGI only.
