Kohei Horikoshi took a decade to wrap up My Hero Academia. Izuku Midoriya’s journey to become the greatest hero had everyone glued to their seats. Chapter 430 marked the journey’s end with an eight-year time skip, featuring Deku as a UA professor. But My Hero Academia was never supposed to run for so long. Initially, Kohei Horikoshi had other plans for his magnum opus.
My Hero Academia has 42 volumes in total, but it was supposed to have only 30 volumes. The mangaka wanted to wrap up everything quickly, but it was the Internship arc that prevented him from doing so. He had a different motive, which he wanted to fulfill in the last arc.
My Hero Academia Was Supposed To End With 30 Volumes
Kohei Horikoshi explored all the characters before the final arc. He wanted the final arc to be memorable. But it might have been difficult if the mangaka stuck with his 30-volume ending. At that point, the story was only 2/3rds completed. Due to one particular reason, he refrained from ending My Hero Academia so quickly. He gave himself time to write a proper conclusion. Moreover, it was impossible to end the manga in 30 volumes since it would have skipped most of the details.
During an interview, the interviewer asked about the percentage of the story that was completed. He replied, “When the decision to extend the series happened, I personally thought “I guess I want to end it here” and it was around Volume 30.” Even the mangaka confirmed it was impossible to end it when only 2/3 of the story was completed. Also, the Internship arc had a major purpose that was going to influence the last arc.
While writing the Internship arc, Horikoshi had a change of mind regarding the ending. During the interview, he also said that a crucial character was going to be introduced at the end of the Internship arc. Kohei Horikoshi wanted all the characters to enter the last arc, even though they were not even close to the final arc at that moment. Thanks to the Internship arc, he decided to extend his manga and had everything planned out.
Deku Finds His True Purpose By The End Of My Hero Academia
Izuku Midoriya, popular as Deku, was quirkless by birth. He always wanted to be a Pro-Hero and idolized All Might, but his condition did not support his dreams. Until one day, he was chosen by All Might to inherit the One for All. That day, Deku’s journey to become the world’s greatest hero began. He achieved his dream by defeating All for One and Tomura Shigaraki once and for all. But he lost One for All in the process and became quirkless.
Chapter 430 featured an eight-year time skip. After the time skips, it is shown that Deku became a professor at UA and wishes to guide the upcoming generation. Even though his Pro-Hero days were over, he was gifted battle armor by his friends and All Might so that he would not give up on his dreams. It was a great ending, even though many thought it did not live up to its hype.
