Mads Mikkelsen has become one of the most popular actors in the industry. He received an immense amount of fame through the James Bond film Casino Royale where he played the antagonist Le Chiffre. Apart from this, he has also been a part of big franchise films like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Dr. Strange, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and others.

Speaking of him becoming a part of the Harry Potter spin-off was very sudden. He portrayed the character of Gellert Grindelwald in the 2022 film, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore after replacing Johnny Depp. As of now, there is no confirmation for a fourth installment, but Mikkelsen has given his take on returning to the franchise.

Fantastic Beast movies take place decades before the Harry Potter films. Over the years, fans have developed an enthusiasm for these films as well, just like the Daniel Radcliffe-led ones. But during the making of the third installment, many controversies occurred, which led to an actor replacement. Johnny Depp was caught up in the Sun Libel case, where the publication accused him of being a “wife-beater”. This article was published in 2018 and the Pirates of the Caribbean actor sued the publication for making such allegations.

Due to all this controversy, Warner Bros asked Johnny Depp to step down from the role of Gellert Grindelwald. The fans were heartbroken as their favorite actor was removed and replaced by Mads Mikkelsen. In a past interview, he also mentioned his commitment to the franchise and how if called for another sequel he might return.

“I think I am. I’m not sure how that works. I guess if they want me to finish the job, they need Grindelwald back.”

Recently, The Marvel actor was awarded the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo title and spoke about how he felt after replacing Depp. He also teased a potential comeback of the Secret Window actor.

“Obviously, well, now the course has changed—he won the suit, the court [case]—so let’s see if he comes back. He might. I’m a big fan of Johnny. I think he’s an amazing actor, I think he did a fantastic job. Having said that, I could not copy it. There was no way I could just copy it because it’s so much him. It would be creative suicide. So, we had to come up with something else, something that was mine, and build a bridge between him and me. So, yes, it was intimidating. His fans were very, very sweet, but they were also very stubborn. I didn’t interact too much with them, but I could understand why they had their hearts broken.”

The Wizarding world has been taken over by controversies and it’s hard to tell if fans will get one more installment of Fantastic Beasts. As of now, the studios haven’t green-lit the sequel.

May it be novels or film adaptations, The Chosen One has taken over the world and has made the franchise a beloved one. The franchise concluded with its final film titled Harry Potter and The Death Hallows: Part II (2011). It’s been more than a decade since the fans got anything related to the Potterverse other than a reunion. But according to recent Bloomberg reports, Warner Bros will be finalizing a contract for a Harry Potter TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s novels soon.
