Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds seem like a homely couple who have a large family. They make jokes about each other on the internet and make tentpole films. Looking at them, one wouldn’t suspect that Lively had done a film where she had to have a leash on her neck. But it did happen in a 2009 film called The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.

The Green Lantern star played a younger version of the main character in the Rebecca Miller-directed film, while Robin Wright played the older counterpart. In the film, Lively had to put a leash on her neck and purr. This one thing made the actress reconsider the life choices that had led her there.

Blake Lively had confessed that she’s a fan of Julianne Moore. But she never had the chance to see the veteran actress work her magic on camera, and when she did, it was a complete surprise for her. Lively was freaked out that Moore could switch between her real persona to the character she was playing almost instantaneously as soon as the cameras started rolling.

In an interview with Marie Claire, she said:

fay Maria (Bello) worked was very method, and then Julianne Moore was the complete opposite—between takes, she was a nice, normal mom talking about her kid’s baseball games. Then you would call ‘Action,’ and suddenly she’s playing this creepo photographer! It freaked me out.”

What freaked out The Age of Adaline star, even more, was the fact that she had to put on a leash as her idol Julianne Moore took pictures of her. In an interview with Nylon, she said, “I had a leash around my neck, and Julianne Moore was taking pictures. I thought, ‘What am I doing with my life? What is happening? How is this a good idea?'” But the audition was even more bizarre.

In a 2009 interview with Collider, Blake Lively revealed the weird audition she had to give in front of Rebecca Miller for her film The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. The frazzled actress said:

“That was a challenge to do in a 4-foot by 4-foot room, in front of Rebecca Miller, and this woman that I had never met before, reading the scene. It was supposed to be my mother and, not knowing what boundaries were there or weren’t, made it difficult.”

However, Lively did get the role, and in the end, enacting all the embarrassing scenes with Julianne Moore seemed worth it. The actress said: “It was fun to crawl around in Lederhosen and have Julianne Moore ask me to meow and spank me, as odd as that seems.” As per The Numbers, the film grossed just $337k domestically, but it had a great critical reception with a 70% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee is available on Amazon Prime Video.
