"I had a lot of fish to fry": Sad Reason Why Drew Barrymore Never Called Christian Bale After Their First Date

Thanks to Steven Spielberg, both Drew Barrymore and Christian Bale rose to fame at an early age, following their respective roles in E.T. and Empire of the Sun. But the duo have different ways of dealing with success at such an early age. Unlike the Batman Begin Star, who wasn’t a big fan of being in the public spotlight, stardom and an abusive household led Barrymore to develop self-destructive behavior, which ended up landing her in rehab at the age of 13.

Despite their contrasting viewpoints, the two actors did once date in their younger years, but unfortunately, the Charlie’s Angels Star never called back Bale again.

Drew Barrymore Revealed Her Reasoning Behind Ghosting Christian Bale

The first (and last) date between Christian Bale and Drew Barrymore wasn’t exactly majestic, as the horror movie they picked to visit turned out atrocious. But the crappy horror flick was the least of Barrymore’s problems, as the actress explained she wasn’t quite in the zone to pursue romantical bonds with boys at the time, as she had bigger problems on her plate to deal with.

“I had a lot of fish to fry, like I had big problems in my world for many years, like in good ways, things you gotta overcome . . . boys were like very secondary,” she said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

But her perspective soon shifted after becoming an adult, as the actress expressed things would’ve been much different if she met Bale in her later years, joking, “I would totally clam up.”

Unlike Drew Barrymore Christian Bale Hated Being a Child Star

Contrary to Drew Barrymore, who had the time of her life working alongside Steven Spielberg, who acted as her father figure in the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Christian Bale wasn’t a big fan of it. While working on movies was a fun experience, the actor wasn’t too fond of dealing with the business side of things and hated handling the press at such a young age.

“It was crap for a while,” Bale once told LA Weekly. “It was crap because, suddenly, you got the real experience of actually doing it, making the movie, traveling to these countries, working with these people…and then, suddenly, it was all about the other side of it, which is the fraudulent side of it, I’ve found, doing the whole press thing, and I sort of couldn’t get my head around it.”

Unlike many child prodigies, who failed to make it big in the realm of Hollywood in their later years, both Barrymore and Bale were able to successfully transition into being prominent adult stars. And while the Talk Show host is enjoying life as a single mother after parting ways with Will Kopelman back in 2016, on the other hand, Bale has been happily married to Sibi Blažić since 2000.
