Charlize Theron remains one of the most talented stars from the 90s who has cultivated and honed themselves through the lens of action to become the most coveted actor of the era. While some may see theatres worldwide populated by the Toms and the Chrises, others see a resurgence of A-listers like Charlize Theron and Tobey Maguire who are slowly but surely rising to the top and redefining their time in the industry.

But behind every Mad Max and Atomic Blonde and Spider-Man, there has been a Cider House Rules or a Pleasantville that softly launched these stars to prepare them for their larger-than-life careers in Hollywood.

Charlize Theron and Tobey Maguire Find Fame in Adversity

No matter how bustling Hollywood life can be, the status that Charlize Theron carries simply because of the influence of her name is one that makes people look away from her Æon Flux days. However, the past hardly gets erased because of the Oscar-worthy careers of such celebrated entertainers, especially not when one works in an industry that likes to enshrine every memory in recorded reels cut up into frames that capture every lovelorn sigh and every dramatic breakdown.

In accordance with that philosophy, often interviews look back at the days that gave the first definitive insight into the potential these stars held. And despite the film catapulting both these stars into the international spotlight, the behind-the-scenes atmosphere was not so much a reflection of the chemistry of the on-screen paramours.

Charlize Theron Recalls Her Difficult Time With Tobey Maguire

In an interview for V Magazine, Charlize Theron (who is currently being featured on every movie screen in the world for her latest appearance in Fast X) claimed how difficult it was to maintain a professional rapport with Maguire on the sets of Cider House Rules.

Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time, yeah. I mean, we’re good now. It was a difficult movie. Every day is completely different for a completely different reason. Whether it’s the weather, or the writing isn’t there, or you don’t get along with your cast mate you have to be able to go to something else that’s just as powerful. Does it make it as enjoyable? Probably not.

I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time. The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time.

A few years later, Tobey Maguire would go on to swing in and out of alcoholism – something he had definitely struggled against for a long time. In 2002, alongside Kirsten Dunst and under the direction of Sam Raimi, he would gain enormous global fame as Spider-Man in the eponymous superhero film, thus becoming the first and the most beloved live-action rendition of the superhero in Hollywood history.
