SUMMARY

  • Chris Pine initially turned down the role of Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman twice because he felt it relegated him to a secondary role as a boyfriend in a superhero movie.
  • Patty Jenkins convinced Pine to take the role by emphasizing the romantic angle, which intrigued Pine and made him see the character differently.
  • Pine was surprised to learn that Wonder Woman 3 was not moving forward. However, he indicated he wouldn't return as Steve even if the franchise continued.

Chris Pine unarguably looks effortlessly perfect in every single role he dons, and the same was the case when he played the fan-favorite character of Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman franchise. Yet, as immaculately as he performed in this role that went on to win the hearts of fans from all across the globe, what’s surprising is that the actor actually never wanted to play him.

Although it may seem unbelievable to many, it is only true that Pine rejected the role of the beloved husband-material Steve — not once, but twice. But the reason behind his turning down the iconic part was only understandable because he felt like his character “sounded like a second fiddle,” and he, for one, had “no interest,” whatsoever “in playing the boyfriend” in a superhero movie.

Chris Pine Never Really Wanted to Play Steve in the Wonder Woman Lore

One of the biggest reasons why Wonder Woman from 2017 became such a massive masterpiece was because of Diana and Steve’s love story, which ended in a heartbreaking turn of events where Chris Pine‘s character loses his life to save the world for the sake of the Amazon superheroine he fell in love with. (Oops, spoiler alert for whoever still hasn’t watched the film.)

Ironically enough, The Princess Diaries actor never really wanted to play this character that the internet ended up terming the perfect husband-material, and had passed on playing him twice. As the 43-year-old actor recently admitted in an interview with Business Insider:

“I had no interest in playing the boyfriend, and it sounded like second fiddle,” Pine said.

As it turns out, it was eventually Patty Jenkins, the mastermind who helmed Diana Prince’s film franchise, who convinced him. As Pine revealed:

“Then, in talking to Patty, the way she described it was, ‘Forget the superhero of it all, this is a romance, this is ‘Casablanca,’ that’s the movie I want to make.'”

Now that was something that really caught the Star Trek Into Darkness actor’s fancy because that made it sound like he wasn’t really playing the “second fiddle” boyfriend in a superhero movie.

“I was like, oh, now that is very cool,” Pine admitted, “because when have you seen a superhero film that was a love story, ultimately? That had nothing to do with blowing shit up.”

Needless to say, Jenkins won him over with these words, and Pine eventually ended up playing the most impeccable Steve Trevor in not only the first film but in the sequel to the Gal Gadot-led movie as well. That said, the actor was also stunned to know that the franchise wouldn’t be continuing beyond its second film.

The Hell or High Water actor has come a long way from not wanting to play Diana Prince’s love interest in the superheroine’s film franchise, considering how the news of the superhit saga not developing a third installment has left him “stunned.” As he told BI:

“I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere.”

Continuing, Pine further emphasized his point on why the franchise should have been allowed to spare more than just that as he said:

“I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”

However, at the same time, Pine, who has been campaigning to return as Prince Nicholas in The Princess Diaries 3 (which is still reported to be in development), doesn’t sound to want to return to Jenkins’ superhero franchise even if a threequel was greenlit.

“Me? No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo,” Pine said. “It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.”

So, for now, we guess fans will just have to hope for Pine to return as Prince Nic and make do with seeing the previously released installments of the Gadot-led film series if they wish to reminisce about Pine’s Steve because the actor most certainly doesn’t seem to be reprising his role anytime soon.

That being said, you can stream the Wonder Woman film series on Prime Video.
