Among all the NPCs we meet in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, one stands out the most; one that has arguably left a far deeper impression on the community than anything else from the entire expansion.
Of course, that NPC is Igon. Now, the NPC’s voice actor, Richard Charles Lintern, has recently shared his thoughts on what it was like to work with Hidetaka Miyazaki, giving us more insight into how the man who’s too angry to die came to be.
Richard Charles Lintern Had No Idea Who Igon Was in Shadow of the Erdtree

Out of the many impossible bosses the expansion throws at us, our fight against the vile dragon, Bayle The Dread, continues to remain one of the most memorable of the bunch.
But it wasn’t the boss itself that made it memorable; it was Igon, the man hell-bent on killing Bayle, as though Captain Ahab himself came back to life after re-learning how to seek revenge from a post-Golden Age Guts.
In a recent interview with IGN, voice actor Richard Charles Lintern shared his thoughts on what it was like to produce Igon’s iconic dialogues. He started by explaining how he hadn’t heard of Hidetaka Miyazaki before, saying:
Now, I’m not entirely stupid, but I had not heard of Mr. Miyazaki before. I didn’t know the game, and I didn’t know the status of the game, and I didn’t know his status. But when I walked into the room, his status was very clear, very clear immediately.

Talking about the production process, he recalled how it took 5-6 hours to complete the session, with a ton of discussion with Miyazaki to get the dialogues just right.
From the interview, it becomes apparent that Lintern had no idea of how big of a deal working in Shadow of Erdtree was or what Igon was doing but was left utterly impressed by the creative vision of FromSoftware.
However, the one key takeaway from the interview is that FromSoftware messed up big time by not adding the dialogue “Bayle The Dread, more like Bayle The Dead!” for Igon at the end of our battle. It’s a shame, truly.
Very Few NPCs Come Close to Being as Memorable as Igon From Shadow of the Erdtree

No one could have predicted just how impactful Lintern’s performance as Igon would be with Elden Ring’s player base. Not even FromSoftware or that “All-Knowing” fella back at the base could’ve seen this coming.
Veterans within the community can attest to this, given that only a few characters, such as Solaire or Laurentius, have stood out like this and received so much praise for their inclusion in the game.
It’s a testament to just how well-crafted his quest is and how well the payoff to the entire fight with Bayle is. Shadow of the Erdtree may have a lot of issues, but Igon’s inclusion was definitely one of the highlights of this expansion.
