Known for starring in the hit HBO drama Euphoria, Hunter Schafer is opening up about her past relationship with actor-singer Dominic Fike. The former couple met while working on the second season of the HBO drama in 2021. They were soon linked together and confirmed their relationship. However, over a year later, Fike publicly announced their separation.
In her recent interview with GQ, Schafer opened up about having a relationship in the public eye, as she highlighted how her relationship with Fike helped her overcome negative feelings towards men.
Hunter Schafer Reflects on Her Relationship With Dominic Fike
During her recent interview, Hunter Schafer described her relationship with the Euphoria co-star Dominic Fike as significant as it was her first time dating “a man.” The actress shared that she never thought of dating a man due to past experiences with men in general.
“I had had so many shitty experiences with men before—not from dating them, but just in life,” she said while explaining that it led her to create an emotional barrier around men. However, her relationship with the Elliot’s Song singer allowed her to break down such barriers.
She shared that it not only helped her to “work through a lot of the feelings of disdain” towards men but also allowed her to open up emotionally in ways she hadn’t experienced before. She told GQ,
“I think it had inhibited a lot of my friendships with men, and a lot of that came down as well. I had a really beautiful relationship with [Fike], and it really opened me up in that way.”
The relationship, however, also brought its own challenges, as it was her first time publicly dating a famous person. “It was completely different,” she said, suggesting that the public spotlight intensified scrutiny and attention during their relationship and split.
Dominic Fike Opened Up About Split from Hunter Schafer
Singer-songwriter Dominic Fike initially confirmed their split in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. He shared that although they had a great time together he decided to be “alone for a while.” Reflecting on his relationship with Schafer, he shared how it was an extraordinary experience for him.
However, he also acknowledged feeling too dependent on his former partner, saying, “But the fact of me saying that—of being uncomfortable being alone—that’s a bad thing.” He later opened up about his issues with codependency in an interview with Apple Music, and how he felt a constant need for Schafer’s presence and support.
“That has actually bled into my romantic relationships, that kind of dynamic and it is often the cause of the end of my relationship—I’m just done being in relationships right now.”
The Little Death actor also addressed working alongside his ex-partner on the third season of the HBO drama. He said that he has a “better dynamic” with everyone, as he suggested that there might still be exceptions due to his split from Schafer. However, he also stated that he believes that things will work out.
Euphoria is available to stream on Max.
