Primarily known for her excellent work as an actress, Helen Mirren is also adored for her ability to make fun of the regal presence she brings to the screen. The actress had an off-screen role in Greta Gerwig’s box-office mammoth Barbie. She recently revealed that she almost appeared in person in the movie in a hilarious scene with Olivia Colman.

Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, took the world by storm upon its release alongside Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller- Oppenheimer. The movie, with its ensemble cast and one-of-a-kind storytelling, impressed the audience. It became the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Not to mention the Barbenheimer trend that Barbie and Oppenheimer started due to their shared release date.

Though she does not make an appearance on the screen, Helen Mirren is a part of Barbie‘s ensemble cast. She plays the role of the Narrator, which is quite unmistakable in all honesty. She has now revealed that she also appeared as herself in the movie, but the scene did not make it into the final cut.

While talking to Variety in a recent interview, Helen Mirren said:

“It was a very funny scene with Olivia Colman sort of playing drunk and us clashing about who is the real grande dame of British actresses. She comes in and tries to take over the role of the Narrator, and I had to fight her off.”

Mirren went on to say that the scene was a parody because British actors support each other. The scene was eventually cut off from the final edit. So, the audience missed their chance to see two of the best British actresses fighting on the screen.

There is no doubt that Helen Mirren and Olivia Colman’s cameos would have been great to see in Barbie, but as it turns out, these were not the only actresses whose cameos did not make it into the final cut of Barbie.

Greta Gerwig’s long-time collaborator Saoirse Ronan was also supposed to make a cameo in the movie. In an interview with Variety, she said:

“I was definitely going to be a Weird Barbie. I don’t know how to take that. I would have been with Kate McKinnon, so that would have been nice. I had a scene but didn’t ever get to do it, and it wasn’t in the movie.”

Timothee Chalamet, another of Greta Gerwig’s long-time collaborators, was also supposed to make a cameo, but that also did not come to fruition due to scheduling conflicts.
