Henry Cavill is all set to return to the big screen with Matthew Vaughn’s spy comedy Argylle. Though he was supposed to continue his tenure as Superman, he had to retire from the role as the DCU underwent a reboot.

Cavill plays the role of the fictional super spy Argylle in the eponymous film which follows a fiction writer being hunted by a crime syndicate after she predicts real-life events in her novels. The Witcher star is picture-perfect for a spy role and has long been in the running for James Bond. However, his look in Argylle has been drawing massive trolls online.

Henry Cavill seemed to have had a sad 2022 as he lost out on two of his biggest roles one after the other. Cavill was cast as Clark Kent a.k.a Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and would reprise his role in subsequent films such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League

The latter had many issues while filming, especially during post-production as director Zack Snyder left the film midway to deal with the death of his daughter. Joss Whedon stepped in to finish the project and ended up re-shooting much of the material. The resulting Justice League was critically and commercially panned and was considered to be one of the biggest disasters.

While Cavill was supposed to star in a sequel to Man of Steel, mismanagement and a lack of vision from WB Studios led him to wait for years for a proper update. He had an extended role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but he finally returned to the red capes in a cameo in the Dwayne Johnson starrer Black Adam

Henry Cavill announced in an Instagram post that he would be returning for the role in an upcoming sequel. He also exited from his role in The Witcher, where he played the role of Geralt of Rivia for three seasons. However, after the lackluster performance of Black Adam, the studio decided to revamp the franchise.

The studio hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to head the new DC Studios and draft a master plan for a new cinematic universe. Gunn announced that the universe would receive a soft reboot and restart with the first film in the new DCU, Superman: Legacy, which would feature a younger Superman. This meant that there was no place for Henry Cavill.

In his first role since the Superman debacle, Henry Cavill plays the role of a fictional spy in Argylle, who is a character in a series of novels written by Elly Conway, played by Bryce Dallas Howard. When a real-life crime syndicate hunts down the author as she predicts their moves in the novels, she is protected by Sam Rockwell’s Aiden, an undercover spy who is nothing like Cavill.

One of the defining features of Cavill’s Argylle in the Matthew Vaughn directorial is his look. The Internet seems to hate the flat-top hairstyle of Henry Cavill in the film and the actor was recklessly trolled for the look. Cavill told EW that it was Matthew Vaughn’s idea. He said,

“That was actually Matthew’s pitch, his signature style. I wanted to have fun with it. Matthew said, ‘Look, this guy’s going to have a particular look and you’ve got to trust me.’ And I did! That’s the kind of thing I was looking for. I’m glad I did it.”

Though Cavill seems to be taking it sportively, fans of the actor were not happy with the outcome. A new look at the actor in his flat top hairstyle while being kissed on the cheeks by two women made the rounds on social media and ended up getting trolled.

Henry Cavill was compared to his Black Adam co-star The Rock due to his signature eyebrow raise and drew comparisons to the old flat top photo of The Rock that became a meme.
