Dark Souls creator FromSoftware is probably giving away their upcoming project, Shadow of the Erdtree, which is a DLC for their 2022 hit Elden Ring. They have been seen talking about the size of this DLC a number of times, specifically this game’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki. He loves talking about his games, and he has always shown a lot of enthusiasm when talking about all of his games.

But one thing that fans often forget is that no company is perfect, and that’s why they end up expecting perfection from them in everything. While the developers themselves are self-aware enough to understand what they might have done wrong at some point and try to make things right. A similar thing happened with Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki when he revealed one of his biggest regrets.

When Dark Souls became a success, FromSoftware decided to release a DLC for it. This DLC was called Knight Artorias; it was an incredible expansion; it added a brand-new area to the game; and it gave fans some hard yet exciting new bosses to combat.

After a while, FromSoftware launched Dark Souls 2, a game that was not received very well by the fans of the original. But FromSoftware did not want to give up; hence, they developed a massive expansion called The Lost Crowns for this game. Once again, this DLC gave players a chance to explore a bunch of new areas and fight new bosses.

Eventually, they also launched Scholar of the First Sin, an expansion as well as an overhaul mode, fixing most issues with the original game. Hence, we are giving fans the Dark Souls experience they were asking for.

Eventually, Project Beast or Bloodborne was launched, and it received critical acclaim at launch. It was also selling pretty well. This happened thanks to this game’s incredible new world and combat mechanics. This game came to players as a breath of fresh air.

Its DLC was even better. The Old Hunters expansion brought with it numerous new bosses, enemy types, secrets, and a large new area to explore. To add to it all, DLC gave fans a story that expanded the world and lore of the original Bloodborne in meaningful ways. This expansion sold pretty well and got a lot of love from fans of Bloodborne. Besides that, this expansion also sets a certain standard for all DLCs to come.

But Dark Souls 3 DLC Ashes of Ariandel was not able to match that quality. When FromSoftware launched this expansion, the response was highly mixed. Some loved its music, bosses, etc., while others did not like the fact that it was too short.

In an interview with Famitsu, even Hidetaka Miyazaki called this DLC one of his regrets. He suggests that he feels like they could have done a better job with it.

honestly have some regrets about the volume of the first DLC. We tend to think of the combined volume of the 1st and 2nd DLC, and I think we were unable to convey the positioning and actual volume of the 1st DLC well

Whatever it is, they made it up with the Ringed City DLC, which was pretty large and had sufficient lore to learn, characters to talk to, and bosses to fight. Hence, it is clear that FromSoftware makes mistakes, but they are quick to correct them too.

On the other hand, their upcoming expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Ertdree, looks pretty brilliant, without a doubt. It is huge and has plenty of exciting new faces to make it worth trying out.

Fans might not know this, but Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is the biggest expansion FromSoftware has worked on yet. Hidetaka Miyazaki himself once suggested this.

This means the two years that they spent working on it have been put to good use. After all, this is what it takes when one goes about designing a brand-new world.
