It is interesting to note that Cranston’s experience with Manson has influenced his work as an actor. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter via YouTube, Cranston opened up about how he and his cousin got to meet the infamous serial killer, years before his days of being a fugitive started. He added,

“His place where he was hanging out with his hippie crowd was called the Spahn Ranch which rented horses to go horseback riding. My cousin and I would go once in a while, and the last time we went I was 10, I think, and she was 11. And we were renting horses from some old guy and some guy comes running going, ‘Charlie’s on the hill, Charlie’s on the hill’ and we get startled so much and he goes, ‘Don’t worry about it. Don’t worry about it.’.

And we look out the window and there’s 8 to 10 guys, men and women, jumping on their horses and galloping down the trail. ‘Wow’. About 20 minutes later, we see that trail of horses coming back. Now the width of this trail was less than this table, so you’re passing by very close to each other and there were a bunch of horses and then there was a guy in the middle, sitting on a horse.

But he wasn’t holding his reins, the person in front was holding his rein, and this guy was short, black hair down to here, dark black eyes, and a beard, and he was just moving to the undulation of the horse. And we are passing by and we’re like starring at him all the way and not saying a word and my cousin turns around and tells me, ‘That must be Charlie’

We didn’t think anything about it, we didn’t even tell anyone about it. And then the murders happen, they capture him and I had forgotten about the incident until, ‘Here’s the face of the guy we just arrested’ and I just about spit out whatever I have in my mouth. That’s the guy. I immediately went back and my cousing called me. It was crazy”

Bryan Cranston‘s cousin joked that it must be Charlie, and Cranston didn’t know what she was talking about until the following year when Manson was arrested for the Tate-LaBianca murders. The Breaking Bad actor has said that the experience was eerie and that he still thinks about it from time to time. He has also said that it is a reminder of how important it is to be aware of your surroundings and to be careful who you trust.
