The Oscars are among the most prestigious awards for actors and artists in the film industry. Every year, despite countless brilliant performances, only a few lucky ones make it to the nomination list, and only one among them emerges victorious. While some are lucky to get various chances every other year or so, some unfortunate ones only have one big shot at the basket.

And for one MCU actress, it seemed she had that one big shot but got snubbed despite winning in the same category at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. And even Oprah Winfrey was upset that the actress ended up losing despite giving one of the best performances of all time.

Over the years there have been numerous actors and actresses who have consistently delivered exceptional performances and set standards for the art of acting. And among them all, the MCU star, Angela Bassett stands at the forefront.

A brilliant and talented actress who has been delivering some of the finest performances of all time, Basset has received several awards over the years. Yet the actress has been snubbed of the Academy Award twice. Once it was back in 1994 for Best Actress for What’s Love Got to Do With It and in 2023 for Best Supporting Actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

And her getting an Oscar nomination for a Marvel movie was perfectly encapsulated by comedian John Mulaney when he stated She got an Oscar nomination for a Marvel movie. That’s like getting a Pulitzer prize for a Reddit comment (via X).

Understandably so, her now winning the Oscar and instead getting an Honorary Award at the Oscars 2024 has been widely criticized by her fans (see X). Even Oprah Winfrey in a recent talk with Basset exclaimed that she was convinced that the Black Panther star would win (via OWN Spotlight).

“I just knew your name was going to be called. I was beside myself [when it wasn’t]! We were beside ourselves.”

Delivering an exceptional performance, Basset truly showed what it meant to be a heartbroken Queen having lost her family and on the verge of now losing her home. Yet the actress lost to Jamie Lee Curtis for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Anyone could have seen how Angela Basset was feeling when she lost her second Oscar win to fellow actress Curtis (see YouTube). And while talking to Oprah Winfrey during the OWN Spotlight series, the actress stated,

“I was gobsmacked! I was. I thought I handled it very well. That was my intention, to handle it very well. It was, of course, a supreme disappointment, and disappointment is human. So I thought, yes, I was disappointed and I handled it like a human being.”

She added how it was important for her to handle the loss with grace for herself and her children who had accompanied her.

“There are going to be these moments of disappointment that you’ll experience, but how do you handle yourself in the midst of them? We’re going to smile, we’re going to be gracious, we’re going to be kind, we’re going to party anyway.”

Despite the disappointment of not winning the Oscar, Angela Bassett remained graceful and humble even in one of the weakest moments of her life. Not only does she stand as a true inspiration for all actors and her fans, but she continues to deliver powerful performances on screen. And fans hope someday she will get another chance at the award.
