How I Met Your Mother was a major fan-favorite series that raged in the entertainment industry for nine widely successful seasons. However, as soon as it reached its finale, everything somehow messed up as the series ended on a real sucker-punch note that divided not only fans but also Alyson Hannigan as the Lily Aldrin portrayer, too, was unhappy with the outcome of the show.
Yet, while the major secret about ‘The Mother’ in the show remained a secret to all the others-even Cobie Smulders-Alyson Hannigan managed to crack it just through a locked door to the make-up trailer.
How A Locked Door To The Make-Up Trailer Helped Alyson Hannigan Crack A Major Secret
While it may come as a surprise to most fans, however, the real identity of ‘The Mother’ in How I Met Your Mother has been one of the most successfully kept secrets: not only from the fans but the show’s cast too–and yes, that includes Cobie Smulders as well.
In fact, Alyson Hannigan, who played Lily Aldrin in the series, cracked the secret that Cristin Milioti was going to play the role of The Mother right before the shoot began. Sharing the same in an interview with news.com.au, the actress said:
“I knew something was up because I was called in to the make-up trailer to take a picture with an actress — and when I got there, the door was locked. In nine seasons, the door had never once been locked.”
She further added how she figured out that the crew needed a picture because of one crucial problem with Cristin Milioti‘s appearance:
“They were concerned before they actually cast her that we looked too similar.”
Despite this, the crew still decided to go on with Milioti anyway, though Alyson Hannigan could not crack the reason behind this one.
How I Met Your Mother Was Supposed To End Differently?
During the same interview, Alyson Hannigan went on to share how How I Met Your Mother was supposed to face a different ending before the makers decided to cut out some of the most vital chunks of the show.
“I was bummed they didn’t just make it a two-hour season-ender, so they would get to show certain parts [that were cut],” she explained. “The table read for the finale was so good, so right, but it was also like 14 hours long. So when I actually saw the final version of the show, I was like ‘They cut out everything!’”
She then explained how the missing of some of these crucial parts played a major role in deteriorating the quality of the series in the finale.
“It just seemed too quick. Obviously, it was a tear-jerker, but with all the stuff that got cut out it was too fast … like ‘OK, now we’re going to find out the mum’s dead, then suddenly, OK — [Barney Stinson]’s with Robin now’, and you’re just like, ‘Wait, what happened?!’”
Continuing, Alyson Hannigan further added:
“There was a funeral scene [that got cut], and all this stuff that I think the audience needed. They needed that time to process that information, instead of having it slap them in the face.”
Perhaps How I Met Your Mother‘s ending wouldn’t have displeased fans so much had the editing of the approximately 14-hour-long finale been done differently.
