People like the show for its relatable characters because it features a group of friends living in New York City with different quirks and personalities. These characters resonated with viewers because they’re like a mirror for their own lives and relationships.

The main leads —  Lily and Marshall’s chemistry gives cute couple vibes throughout the show — just like any other couple with lots of love and care for each other. But, in reality, the actress who played the role of Lily Aldrin actually refused to kiss his on-screen husband because of his one habit which still disgusts her.

For nine seasons, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel were the ultimate TV couple on How I Met Your Mother. As Lily and Marshall, they were like relationship goals for everyone. But here’s the kicker — Hannigan had to draw the line when it came to kissing Segel.

The former Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress said she couldn’t handle the fact that her TV hubby, Jason Segel, was a real-life smoker. Hannigan told Digital Spy in 2008:

“I cannot stand cigarette smoke. It’s like kissing an ashtray,….”

Hannigan also revealed that Segel would try to freshen up with breath mints or gum to make those on-screen kisses more bearable. But sadly, it didn’t work out.

Even though Jason Segel was a heavy smoker, Alyson Hannigan was all in to help quit his nasty smoking habit. She said in the same interview with the Digital Spy:

“When we started the pilot [for the show] he was like, ‘Get me to stop smoking, I’ll be your best friend.’ So we did this bet where he would owe me $10 every time he had a cigarette. After the first day, he owed me $200.”

Hannigan efforts worked out as the Shrinking star quit smoking cold turkey for a while — he cooperated with her without the help of any aides. But as Hannigan said, Segel started getting “stressed out” once and couldn’t resist lighting cigarettes again.

It looks like it’s a tough cookie for Segel to quit that bad habit he has developed. Although it’s unknown how Hannigan got over her aversion, it’s clear they kissed (on-screen) less than what writers had initially planned. Despite this, both the actors always remained on good terms.
