Jackie Chan has been in and around the Hollywood action cinematic landscape on a few occasions. The fan-favorite actor’s presence in any movie could be a delight as he could blend his unique comic appeal with engrossing action moves.
Chan recently appeared in Ride On, a regional movie directed by Larry Yang, and the actor collaborated with John Cena in Scott Waugh’s Netflix action adventure Hidden Strike. When it comes to the action franchise The Expendables, it’s legit to ask why Chan never appeared in any of the franchises.
Expend4bles Director Revealed the Possibility of Joining The Expendables Franchise
Expend4bles director Scott Waugh who recently directed Jackie Chan in Hidden Strike gives a positive update on the legendary actor joining the action-packed franchise. Chan has never appeared in the franchise and many might wonder why but the director of the latest installment has high hopes for the actor coming on board in the possible Expendables 5. Speaking with JoBlo Celebrity Interviews Waugh revealed why Chan could be an important actor in the possible 5th installment of the franchise.
“Look I think anything’s possible, and I know Jackie’s a huge Sly fan, Sly has such reverence for Jackie as well. I think if the stars align in their schedules, which is always so freaking complicated, I would really hope that we could make that happen, that’d be fantastic.”
Now the question is, will Expendables 5 happen? Hard to say as the movie performed poorly at the box office and received mostly negative reviews. The Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone starrer movie opened at only $8.3 million at the domestic box office while scoring only 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. Also, the movie has omitted Arnold Schwarzenegger and a few others. But it would be interesting to see if the studio gamble to revive the franchise with another installment.
The Real Reason Why Jackie Chan Never Appeared in The Expendables
The Expendables has been a big franchise with perhaps the greatest ensemble of action stars around the world including the action legends Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Harrison Ford. Chan’s fellow Jet Li also made his appearance but the Rush Hour actor stayed away from the franchise. Speaking with Den of Geek, the actor revealed why he never appeared in the Stallone’s franchise. “This morning I did hear – the office called – Sly [Stallone] wants me for Expendables 4,” Chan spoke of Stallone approaching him for Expend4bles (via Digital Spy)
“I said, ‘OK.’ Because they already asked me to be in two and three, but I refused. Well, I didn’t refuse, but I said, ‘Sly, can’t we just do you and me? Not just a bunch of people and me only coming out for five minutes.’ Because then the audience is, ‘Oh!’ And then I’m gone!”
Stallone approached Chan for earlier movies in the franchise as well but the actor could not clear his busy schedule.
Expend4bles is currently showing in the theaters.
