The widely popular and immensely loved manga and anime series, One Piece by Eiichiro Oda is getting a live-action TV Series by Netflix, and it is around the corner. Needless to say, the cast of the live-action TV Series are aggressively promoting their upcoming project. Iñaki Godoy, who will play the role of the Straw Hat Pirates’ Captain met Mayumi Tanaka, the legendary voice actor of Monkey D. Luffy in the anime.

Netflix released a video where Iñaki Godoy met the legendary voice actor, and together they created a wonderful moment. They imitated a legendary moment from One Piece, and that moment created a sense of wonder and amazement that blurred the lines between reality and fiction. The moment was so beautiful that the hype for the series soared through the roof.

Mayumi Tanaka and Iñaki Godoy Recreated An Iconic Moment Of Monkey D. Luffy

Anime fans were in for a treat at the 2023 Anime Expo held in Los Angeles, as they were the first ones to watch a video of Mayumi Tanaka, the legendary voice actor of The Future King. She welcomed Iñaki Godoy with a symbolic gift, that is, Luffy’s iconic straw hat.

The video started with Godoy, greeting the fans and stating that he recently visited Japan, and got the opportunity to meet the legendary voice actor, Mayumi Tanaka, who has been voicing Luffy since 1999. And how she inspired him to be the very best version of himself. 

“Hello, I’m Mayumi Tanaka! I’ve been voicing Monkey D. Luffy since 1999 for over 20 years. For the live-action, there will be a real-life Luffy, and just as I was recording the Japanese dub, Iñaki [Godoy] showed up. I’m so thrilled! Thanks for coming! So glad we met.”

Mayumi Tanaka continued speaking in the voice of the Fifth Emperor of the Sea, praising the young actor and how she is hoping that people are looking forward to watching the One Piece live-action TV Series. In the end, both actors said the iconic dialogue of Monkey D. Luffy.

“He’s young enough to be my grandson. I’m so happy to meet him. Hope you’re all looking forward to the show. It’s really something special. You know, um…there’s a language barrier, but…You were great. Truly great. I’m gonna be King of the Pirates!”

The scene cuts where the actors talk about other details of the, and who will voice the characters in different languages. Later, in the video Godoy and Mayumi Tanaka recreated an iconic moment where Godoy went down on one knee and Tanaka put a straw hat on his head, saying “I leave this hat with you. Bring it to me someday…once you’ve become a great pirate” It was a beautiful moment where life mimicked art, similar to when Red-haired Shanks gifted the Straw Hat to a young Monkey D. Luffy.

Eiichiro Oda Has Prepared Himself For The Negative Comments On The Live-Action Series

One Piece fans can sit back and relax, as Eiichiro Oda has made sure that he did his best to make sure to make Netflix’s live-action series to be as perfect as possible. He added in his note that “There were no compromises on this show.”

No matter how perfect the series turns out to be, there will be some fans who will not be delighted with the TV Series, as they would nitpick meticulous details, pointing out how some characters lack a thing or two. But Eiichiro Oda will not let the criticism get to him, as in his note, he welcomes criticism with open arms.

“After the launch, I’m sure I’ll hear about some people pointing out how this character is missing or that scene is omitted, or this bit is different from the manga. But I’m sure they’ll come from a place of love, so I intend to enjoy even those comments! Lol. The story will span 8 episodes and take us up through you-know-where!!”

Eiichiro Oda knows how to take criticism, as he is one of the most renowned mangaka artists. He has created an empire selling 516.6 million copies of One Piece manga, becoming the best-selling manga of all time, and amassing over $14.5 billion between its manga, anime, video games, and related merchandise.

Oda also praised the production team stating they he cannot wait for them to get “the acclaim they deserve from everyone around the world.” Oda also added that in case there were any “gripes” he’d be there to receive them, as well.
